Local Home Care Agency Celebrates Helping Seniors for over a Decade

Home Instead Senior Care is a local non-medical, in-home care agency that covers seven counties throughout central and northern Pennsylvania.

Ten years ago, when Joe DeLauter first opened the doors with a small office in downtown Lewisburg, he never dreamed how his business would grow and truly change the lives of so many local seniors.  DeLauter and his wife Sandy weren't strangers to the Home Instead Senior Care model. If fact, DeLauter worked alongside his daughter and son-in-law who have successfully managed a Home Instead franchise office in the State College area.

DeLauter saw firsthand how his daughter and son-in-law were able to help seniors age safely and independently in their own homes. He appreciated all of the special "extras" Home Instead would do in the community. DeLauter will often re-tell the story of when he delivered a gift to a homebound man through the Be a Santa to a Senior Program. The man was so touched by the kind gesture that he began to cry - he never imagined he would receive any Christmas gifts. That left a lasting impression on DeLauter who has now implemented the same program here, which distributed over 1700 gifts to local seniors last December.

From the beginning, DeLauter has identified with the mission of Home Instead and wanted to do the same thing in a place where there was truly a need for services. Soon it was identified Union, Snyder and Northumberland counties would be where he would start. And did he start - pounding the pavement himself and quickly adding to his team with CAREGivers, a nurse and his son, Joe Jr., who had management experience.

As time progressed, DeLauter met with elder care professionals at the hospitals, nursing homes and the local area agencies on aging. He would speak to local groups about common aging issues and became very involved as an advocate for individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia. People talked - especially families who received Home Instead's care and business continued to grow along with the need for qualified caregivers.

In 2008 Home Instead outgrew their space on Fourth Street in Lewisburg and so they moved their operations to the Creamery Building on Buffalo Road.  Their current location boasts office space, a comprehensive training room with a mock bathroom, Hoyer lift and other medical equipment. New this year is the addition of the CAREGiver Cafe, a space where existing caregivers can stop, recharge and get a cup of coffee or where new, potential caregivers can learn about the joys of becoming a Home Instead CAREGiver.

As the need for services has increased, so has the Home Instead Senior Care area. In 2013, DeLauter began providing services in Lycoming, Columbia and Montour counties and opened an office on River Avenue in Williamsport.  As more and more seniors chose to age in place, the demands for one-on-one caregiving services will only increase.

To celebrate the success of the last decade, the team at Home Instead Senior Care is hosting an After Hours party on Wednesday, October 21st from 5 PM until 7 PM at the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce.  Members who are interested in attending should contact Beth at 570-601-4286 or beth.hogan-nelson@homeinstead.com on or before October 19th.
