Honoree Meredith: ‘I Have to Take Care Of Someone Because That’s Who I Am’
Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month Meredith Ussery has a servant’s heart whose humble spirit also is an element of her winsome personality. When Meredith was asked what she likes about her job, it wasn’t surprising when she said quietly, “I have to take care of someone because that’s who I am. That’s my identity.”
Meredith added: “I like helping people and making them feel good. I always have enjoyed this line of work, and I’ve always been in health care. I always have helped someone wherever I’ve gone for my job. I try to make their lives better.”
Home Instead Recruitment and Engagement Advisor Rozephyr Jean said, “The world needs more Merediths. We’d be a better place. Meredith consistently exemplifies reliability, professionalism and compassion as a Care Pro. She is dependable, rarely misses work and is always willing to step in and pick up additional shifts when needed. Meredith takes the initiative in managing her schedule and timekeeping responsibilities, demonstrating a strong sense of accountability.”
Referring to Meredith’s role with Home Instead of San Angelo, Texas, Rozephyr added: “Meredith also maintains excellent communication with the office, promptly reporting changes in her client’s conditions to help ensure her client receives the highest quality of care. Meredith’s patience, kindness and genuine dedication to those whom she serves make a meaningful difference every day. Meredith is committed to personal and professional growth, regularly participating in training opportunities to enhance her skills and better support her clients.”
Rozephyr, speaking on behalf of award-winning franchise co-owners William and Lorena Shensky, said: “We are incredibly grateful for Meredith's dedication to our clients, our team and our mission. Thank you, Meredith, for all that you do!”
Meredith joined Home Instead on Sept. 2, 2025. “I first noticed Home Instead when I saw one of their flyers at a hospital in San Angelo. I had been looking for extra hours, as a second job, to supplement the income I received at another job. I had been working with another in-home care agency, but the hours had started to lessen.”
Meredith has a tremendous amount of professional senior-care experience. “I worked at an assisted living care community in 2001. I am a longtime CNA who worked for one employer for 13 years and then for another employer for another 13 years. I worked at San Angelo’s major hospital from 2007 to 2021. In high school, I worked at the El Dorado Nursing Home on weekends and after school,” Meredith said.
Meredith is the eighth of nine children. As a family caregiver, she has taken care of her parents, a sister and several brothers. She explained: “My parents, four brothers and a sister have passed away. I help take care of a sister who has MS. She is doing OK and lives on her own.”
Exhibiting her bonding and relationship-building, Meredith has had only one regular client since she joined Home Instead. “My lady client really loves me. She is a 24/7 client who is in her late 80s. I am with her on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 12-hour shifts. Sometimes the office calls for an additional 12-hour shift if someone cannot work. She is a great lady, a person who is full of life. She is an interesting lady,” Meredith said.
She added: “I really like Home Instead. It is a good company. If they call for extra help with shifts, I’ll try to fill in.”
