CAREGiver of the Month Janeth Hernandez-Salinas and her husband are dreaming big. They want to run their own business and grow it as big as possible, and Janeth credits Home Instead® of Boulder, Broomfield and northwest Adams Counties for helping them move closer to that dream with flexible scheduling for Janeth’s job.
“I looked for night jobs on Indeed.com, came across Home Instead and realized the job was perfect for me. I never thought I could get paid to do something I enjoy. Home Instead has made it possible for me to be with my family and also keep working on our dream while I get to take care of great people with so many backgrounds,” said Janeth, who joined owner Michael Lammers’ award-winning Home Instead® franchise about a year ago.
Janeth and her husband often had talked about a business ownership over the years, and they finally opened a towing business near the end of 2020. “We did our research and completely changed our lives. We moved about 33 miles from Thornton to Keenesburg because we knew a start-up would take space. We downsized from our 3,200-square-foot home in the city to a 1,700-square-foot home and acreage where we could park our tow truck and have room for more,” Janeth said. “While we get our company name out in the public and build the business, I decided to work nights and be with our three kids at home during the day while my husband went out and did his towing.”
Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Rianne Matthews is glad Janeth found the right job match to meet her family’s needs. Before Janeth was a Home Instead CAREGiver, she was a dental assistant. Janeth works with Home Instead as a CAREGiver full time. She also works a couple of days as a CNA at a transitional skilled nursing facility. “That is something I’ve wanted to do but always wondered if it was right for me. I’m learning a lot,” said Janeth, who had served as a family caregiver for her grandmother, who had dementia. “One day when the time comes, I do plan on caring for my parents, but that’s still a long time away hopefully.”
Janeth loves listening carefully to stories about her Home Instead clients’ lives – their beginning, their middle years and now their current days. She said: “I also feel very proud I know how to calm them down when they’re not feeling good and are upset.” For Janeth, touching lives impacts her soul, whether she is providing physical help such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders or personal care or if she is offering emotional support in a companionship role.
One of Janeth’s favorite Home Instead client stories comes from a man’s first date with his future wife. Janeth explained: “They were really young, barely past their teen years. While the husband client usually now has a really hard time getting his words out, his words flowed easily when he told this story. There was no hesitation.”
Janeth added: “The client was a photographer, but he was also a wonderful sketch artist. When he met his future wife, he asked if he could draw her portrait while they had a picnic. She was amazed when she saw the sketch because she didn’t know he was a really good artist – she thought he was joking. I could just see the joy in his face and how happy he was when he was telling me that story. It took him back to that moment. And then he showed me the picture. It was beautiful, such a great love story.”
