Home Instead’s Flexibility Helps Shaniya With LPN Classes

In the fall of 2025, Shaniya Lowe’s three-part mission was crystal clear: She wanted to continue a career of helping people in need while at the same time striving to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. To blend those two aspects of her life, Shaniya sought the third goal – an exceptional employer whose scheduling flexibility was unmatched in the Houston area.

Shaniya joined owner Greg Gomez-Mira’s Home Instead® franchise in south-central Houston seven months ago. “I’ve done a lot of professional caregiving over the years, and Home Instead was always a company in which I had been interested. The agency also was on my mind because it was very visible. The Home Instead logo-wrapped company cars in which the Care Pros traveled caught my eye in the area of the city where I lived,” Shaniya explained.

The Shaniya-Home Instead match has been nearly a perfect one. In May, the award-winning office honored Shaniya as its Care Professional of the Month. Home Instead General Manager Destiny Wesley said Shaniya embodies Home Instead’s guiding principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.” Among the considerations for achieving Care Pro of the Month status, an employee has shown he or she has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Empathy and compassion are considered for the award, as well as skill and wisdom for dealing with challenging situations.

Shaniya clearly “hit the ground running” when she came aboard at Home Instead. “I’ve worked in professional caregiving for years,” she said, “but now I am furthering my education while I pursue my LPN degree. Once I reach that step in my life, I want to keep going and become a Registered Nurse. The thing I like most about my Care Pro job is my ability to help multiple clients on a one-on-one basis with a flexible schedule while still being able to go to school.”

Working for Home Instead has put Shaniya on a trajectory for a goal that she’d considered as a young girl. “Growing up,” Shaniya recalled, “my mother was an experienced professional caregiver and the person who got the contracts for her in-home care company. She used to take me along with her sometimes, and I would help her with certain things. As a family caregiver, I cared for my dad for plenty of years because he’s legally blind.”

In a little more than a half-year with Home Instead, Shaniya has begun storing away memories that will last a lifetime. “My favorite client stories include Mrs. C. She’s a great lady who is just dealing with some challenges. Companionship is an important component of care for Mrs. C. When I would care for her, we would sit and talk, and we would have some laughs. Mrs. C. would tell me stories about England, where she grew up. I loved hearing about her British culture. Although not every shift was a good day, we still shared laughs,” Shaniya said.

Shaniya loves being a part of the Care Pro team for one of the Houston area’s outstanding Home Instead franchises, a member of the world’s largest home-care network and the most advanced care platform. Overall, there are more than 100,000 Care Pros across 13 countries, meeting the growing needs of millions of older adults and their families worldwide. For Shaniya and her fellow Care Pros, touching lives impacts their souls, whether they are providing physical help such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders or personal care or if they are offering emotional support in a companionship role.
