Client Looks to MaShalle for Spiritual Faith, Reassurance

Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month MaShalle Roberts’ client was crying one day during breakfast, and MaShalle sensed the reason. “My client has a medical challenge,” MaShalle explained, “and she was worried. The emotional heaviness – discouragement – had gotten the best of her that morning. I understood and empathized. I asked, ‘Can I pray for you?’ She said yes, so I gently laid hands on her and prayed.”

The spiritual aura seemed to lighten in the room. It’s no secret MaShalle quickly formed a close relationship with her client when MaShalle came alongside her near the end of September in 2025. MaShalle said: “She is special. We bonded because we share a similar faith. She is a sister in the Lord. We pray together, read Scripture and discuss devotions and Bible passages.”

MaShalle added: “She shares biblical tidbits of wisdom. We ask each other, ‘What has God told us today?’ and we always decide God is so awesome and so good. I look her in the eyes and confidently say, ‘God will help you get through this challenge.’ But it’s a two-way street for us spiritually. We pray for each other’s challenges. The transcendent atmosphere in her home is better because we both believe Jesus is there with us.”

MaShalle speculates that her client’s medical condition might have improved since she began assisting the 60-year-old former nurse. “I think possibly there has been some healing. She has gained three pounds, which is huge because she had been consistently losing weight. I want her to gain weight. Meal preparation is undertaken with that in mind. Because she had been a nurse, she understands her challenge. She is homebound, so she cannot go to church. Even going to medical appointments is taxing for her. On certain days, she just does not feel well.”

MaShalle pointed out: “She looks to me for reassurance, so I keep the mood positive. Most of the time, she is optimistic. She tells me, ‘I appreciate you!’ I am with her in the mornings Monday through Friday. She is a great client.”

Engagement and Training Coordinator Rozephyr Jean said she was thrilled to honor MaShalle as the December Care Pro of the Month at Home Instead of San Angelo, Texas, an award-winning franchise owned by Lorena and William Shensky. “Since joining Home Instead in May 2025,” Rozephyr said, “MaShalle has continually shown what it means to serve with a huge heart.”

  • We are so grateful to have MaShalle on our team and could not be prouder to honor her. Congratulations, MaShalle – and thank you for everything you do!”

MaShalle’s comet-like entry at Home Instead of San Angelo was her second stint within the network. In 2024, she worked for eight months with Home Instead of Green Valley, Arizona, a half-hour south of Tucson. “I loved Home Instead in Green Valley, where we moved for my husband’s job. I was happy with my job, but we missed San Angelo,” MaShalle said.

MaShalle also has worked in professional senior care in skilled nursing communities and for other agencies. MaShalle picked up her compassionate touch with seniors as a family caregiver. She cared for her uncle for 4½ years before he passed away at age 70 in 2022. She earlier had helped her grandmother in New Mexico, beginning at age 12. MaShalle recalled: “When I got my dad’s approval to help her at that young age, I did so. I checked on her often. I stayed with her a lot of times. For example, I spent a whole summer with her. She taught me a lot. I liked being with my grandma.”

MaShalle added: “Grandma was very wise, very independent and spoke her mind. She’d tell you what she thought straight out, whether it was good or bad. She’d correct you when she felt it was needed, but she’d do it in kindness. She was always warning us grandchildren about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and worried about our well-being. She died at age 98 in 2012. She lived by herself until age 92. At that age, someone would stay with her during the day. When she reached 95, she had someone with her 24/7. There was no nursing home.”

MaShalle often thinks of her grandmother when she’s helping Home Instead clients. “I have three regular clients, and I consider all my clients to be good friends. I love this company. I have worked with many agencies, and this is the best one.”
