Mia is a wonderful caregiver. She brings a sense of calm and peace, and she is cheerful, gentle, conscientious, and willing to help in any way she can. After finishing her tasks, she takes the initiative to ask what else she can do. Misty is an outstanding caregiver. She’s remarkably attentive, happily steps in to help with anything, and thrives when she stays busy throughout her shift.

Leah B., Home Instead Black Hills, SD

In Rapid City, Leah B has become a trusted companion for local seniors and their families. Leah comes to us with a background in in one way or another ive been caring for people since i graduated from college with my bachelor's. even in high-school i spent some time as a dietary aid in our local nursing home, where i learned to engage in fabulous conversations and remember with our clients there. after i graduated with my bachelor's i spent time helping the elderly understand their medicare d enrollment through my time as an extension educator. i worked on my masters and worked full time at the human services center, spending time on many of the units, some of the specialized units we had a unit dedicated to the elderly. spending time on that unit gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in understanding dementia and experience with changing things up and engaging in conversation even without a worded response. i was a counselor at this time as well and learned and received many trainings regarding being a trauma informed counselor. i changed my career path in 2023 and did in home caregiver with my uncle in his last year of life. i learned so much by helping my aunt and family prepare for and walk this path, just to listen to the clients energy and communicate this to the family.. With 1.5 years at Home Instead, Leah has built relationships rooted in trust, compassion, and shared joy.

For Leah, the reward is in the connection. "Being able to help them enjoy their life and tell their stories the way they want," Leah shares. Through these shared moments, Leah has learned valuable life lessons, noting, "How they want to live their life and story matters."

Leah's daily goal is simple: ensure every client feels safe, comfortable, and cared for. Skilled in the experiences i have, my flexibility, and abilities in detailed observation i am skilled in complex cases which include not just a declining dementia case but someone with physical demands., Leah finds joy in the details of each visit. "Its diversity," Leah says of a typical day.

Leah praises the local team for their dedication and communication. "The ability to jump in and help where needed, and use new technologies," Leah notes. "Take care of its carepros."

In every way, Leah reflects the heart of caregiving: consistency, connection, and the quiet pride of knowing you've made someone's life better today.

Helpful FAQs

Our approach is relationship first. We focus on matching each client with Care Pros who fit their needs, routines, and personality while finding ways to make care work even when circumstances are complicated.

Our approximately 70 Care Pros are backed by a local office team with more than 54 years of combined Home Instead experience. Several leaders have been with Home Instead for 8–11+ years, our Director is a Registered Nurse, and our owner spent nearly a decade supporting Home Instead franchises nationwide before becoming a local franchise owner.

Our strongest presence is in Rapid City, with experience serving older adults from Hot Springs and Custer in the Southern Hills to Sturgis, Spearfish, Belle Fourche, and surrounding Northern Hills communities.

Distance matters here. Many clients live in rural homes or small towns far from family, healthcare providers, transportation, and other services. Our team understands those realities and works to bring dependable support directly to clients wherever they call home.

Sometimes. When staffing is available, Home Instead Black Hills can coordinate a same-day start of care.

Our scheduling, Client Care, and after-hours teams work together to understand the situation, identify an appropriate Care Pro, and coordinate care. We’re accustomed to responding to urgent needs, including unexpected hospital discharges and sudden changes in a family’s circumstances.

This is a common situation in the Black Hills. Many older adults live significant distances from adult children who may be hours away or out of state.

Our local Care Pros can provide consistent support at home, while our team helps families stay connected as needs change. We also know resources throughout communities from Rapid City to the Northern and Southern Hills, which can help when a family is trying to coordinate support from a distance.

Every Care Pro completes at least 19 hours of training and supervised experience before providing care independently: seven hours of online education, eight hours of hands-on personal care training, and a four-hour shadow visit with an experienced Care Pro.

The final shadow experience is competency-based. Care Pros must demonstrate the skills needed to provide care safely and confidently before working independently.

Additional client-specific and service-specific training is provided when needed.

We sponsor and participate in the Rapid City Walk to End Alzheimer’s as a Promise Garden sponsor and support the local Parkinson’s Walk.

Our team also supports high school activities, churches, nonprofits, and other community programs throughout the year.

Community support sometimes means simply helping a family find the right resource. We regularly connect older adults with local programs, benefits, grants, and services—even when Home Instead isn’t the right care solution for them.
