Companion care to support the whole person.
A little company can go a long way. Maybe you live alone, or you don’t drive as much. Maybe you simply want someone to share in the things you love. Companion care from Home Instead helps you stay connected and engaged with the life you love.
Here’s how companion care can help:
- More connection & less isolation – enjoy friendly conversations and shared moments that reduce loneliness.
- Do more of what you love – from hobbies and games to walks and puzzles, stay engaged with what you enjoy most.
- Extra awareness at home – a regular presence may help notice changes in routines or well-being so families can stay informed.
- Support with daily routines – let us help with meals, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and more.
- Outings and transportation – get a ride to errands, appointments, and community activities.
- Confidence knowing someone is there – benefit from having a caring presence and an extra set of eyes around the house.

How we make companion care feel personal.
Our approach to companion care starts with getting to know you. What are your care needs? What are your hobbies and what brings you joy? Then when it’s time to match you with a vetted Care Pro, we consider compatibility, experience, and skill fit. Because while we want you to get the best care, we also want companionship to feel natural.
From there, care stays personal. Whether it’s a conversation, completing a puzzle, or helping you get around the house, your local Care Pro will show up with warmth and respect.
Friendly companionship on your schedule.

Companion Care Services FAQs
It starts with learning what the person actually enjoys.
One local client was 58 and living with cognitive challenges after a brain injury. His Care Pro didn’t limit companionship to sitting together at home—they went golfing, hiking, fishing, and on long drives.
Our philosophy is Relationship First, Task Second. The activity itself matters, but so does having a Care Pro who understands what gives that individual enjoyment, connection, and purpose.
Care Pros receive approximately two hours of initial companion-care training focused on learning a client’s interests, routines, and preferences and building genuine relationships.
Those skills are reinforced with another two to three hours of learning throughout the year.
For the Black Hills team, companionship isn’t simply having someone present. It’s understanding the individual well enough to make time together meaningful.
Our team has gone to unusual lengths when a client’s situation called for it.
Carolyn, a Lead Care Pro who has been with Home Instead since 2019 and provided nearly 12,000 hours of local care, has even travelled out of state with a client for medical treatment.
She’s also a trusted mentor who helps newer Care Pros through their first shadow visits and is often called on for challenging care situations.
