Marluci (Luci) Martins
Nomination for 
2016 CAREGiver of the Year

Marluci Martins, Luci as she likes to be called, was born and raised in Brazil. She came to live in the United States in 1982.  In September of 2013, Luci happily joined our team as a CAREGiver at the Daytona Home Instead Senior Care office.  She has reached 4,000 service hours with her clients. She often refers employees and clients; she tells me, "I love being a Caregiver because I realized long ago that happiness comes when you 'do work that comes from within the heart'."  HISC has great flexibility and benefits to offer, but Luci chose this career because she was used to sharing her heart in the caregiver role. She had many years of caring for family member(s) that suffered with life long illness and Parkinson's disease. Luci smiles brightly when she talks about how much she completely enjoys the work and the time that she spends with her clients. CAREGiving is most definitely her niche she tells me.

Luci likes to take the lead and learn all she can to help her clients. She tells me that companionship is just what many clients need to bring a smile. When asked if she could share a favorite memory, she tells me a story about when she had cared for a male client that was 101 years old. He has passed now, but every day he would happily greet her and say very sweet things about the care and help she gave to him. Luci feels that senior's share worlds of wisdom with you when you spend time with them. When you truly care for them, they appreciate and love you back very deeply. She speaks and writes in Portuguese, French, and Spanish as well as in English. Luci has enjoyed learning to speak and read a wide group of languages as it helps to build bonds as well as make people more comfortable when you are able to read and speak a client's first language. She is working on learning Chinese and talked to me about an article that she had read many years ago. The article said that when we are young, we are more receptive to learning, so whenever a young child is given the chance to learn more than one language, they are then open to learning many more languages throughout their life time. She feels that languages such as Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian, and even Chinese all have so many similarities that they are much easier to figure out after the first language is familiar. 

Clients describe Luci as an amazing and responsible person with a huge heart. When you first meet Luci, it is easy to see why they would choose those words to describe her personality traits. She builds trust by being compassionate, kindhearted, and always puts the clients' needs first. She never hesitates to pick up shifts or go the extra mile for her clients. Luci shared with me that she also enjoys returning home, after her work day, to spend the evenings with her feathery friends. Luci shares her home life with her three birds and feels that their greeting and unconditional love can heal anything that the day can bring to drain her.  

When asked about her relationship with the HISC team, Luci repeats that she is "so very happy in my position at HISC. I feel very blessed to be a caregiver". "It is not only taking care of my clients that matter to me, but also the comfort and the support within the company that is equally important." Luci said that she knew immediately, when she came in for the initial interview, that HISC was the place for her. The warm smiles and kindness from the team at HISC made her feel as though she had come to the right place for a job.

Client coordinator Kim tells me about a time when Luci did not even hesitate (having already met an autistic client at a facility when taking care of one of her own clients) she quickly stepped up to help with his care when he became a new client at HISC. Knowing that he would have had difficulty with someone new, she took the lead and helped him to be prepared for his team of caregivers and to also organize his home. Another time when she heard that there was a need, Luci offered to come back in to work in order to drive an elderly client to another facility in order to be able to see a sister that was not doing well in care at another facility.

Luci enjoys the educational part of her job as well; she takes the lead and attends HISC in-service trainings whenever she has the ability. She has attended Caregiver Learning & Development, Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias Care, Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Hospice, and Professional Boundaries. More than once she has signed up to attend Specialized Alzheimer's course, but was needed for a shift so she has rescheduled the training. 

Luci is always professional, on time and so sweet. She is very caring and always helping out anywhere needed. She makes sure to keep up with everything involving clients' appointments, sleeping schedules and makes sure that they are comfortable. Luci often reflects that her clients are like her very own family. Marluci "Luci' Martins has a passion for CAREGiving that just shines. The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Daytona proudly nominates her for CAREGiver of the Year 2016.
