Mary Boima came aboard to Home Instead in 2015 but has served in Home Care for over 20 years. She enjoys meeting new people and finding ways to have an uplifting experience. In her free time, Mary enjoys going fishing, swimming, taking short trips and listening to Smokey Robinson. Words that can be used to describe Mary includes, dedicated, dependable, outgoing, uplifting and a team player. She had a career change many years ago from being a back analyst to working in home care. Mary shares her heart in stating what led her to home care. She stated that, “My heart beat changed when I got involved with elderly and disable people and saw the issues they were facing in carrying out the daily activities”. Mary helped take care of her parents and grandparents whom both experienced challenges after experiencing sessions with diabetes, and dementia. She then witnessed firsthand what those diseases were capable of.
Mary shared that she enjoys her position her at Home Instead. She shared that each case has blessed and given her blessings of growth. It warms her heart that she can help her clients continue to stay at home and help them with their activities of daily living. She shared the story of one of her clients who taught her the Italian language. She said that when she arrived, she would greet him and speak some of the language and that made him happy and it was a great experience. She shared that another client that she cared for used to love to cook and cut out recipes from the newspaper and go out to the market, however now that she cannot perform those tasks, Mary is her hand piece. She stated that the client isn’t able to cook in the kitchen like she used to, so she gives her instructions and she follows her recipes. Mary was very excited to share that they made Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner together and it was great working with her. She was very happy to get the client involved and share that experience with her. She stated that just being there to provide that balance and uphold her dignity is a blessing to her heart. She shared that making a difference in someone’s life is what it is all about.
Mary stated that she has a good relationship with the office staff and that they are great, caring and professional. She builds trust with her client by always being present and stated that all of her clients are very appreciative of the work she does for them. Mary takes the lead and is always looking for ways to increase her skill level and has taken numerous training classes with us including a Heart Disease in-service, Professional Boundaries, Hospice training, and Specialized Alzheimer's. Prior to coming to Home Instead, Mary had completed training as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She had also taken training to obtain certification as an Elder Advocate.
