  3. Becoming A Home Care Aide in California

Interested in becoming a Caregiver? Do you know the difference between a Caregiver and a Home Care Aide (HCA)? Did you know that after January 1, 2016, all Caregivers (not just those that work for Home Instead Senior Care) must be registered with the State of California?

In California, the terms “Caregiver” and “Home Care Aide” are synonymous, meaning they both refer to the same thing.

According to Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act (HCSCPA), anyone working for a licensed Home Care Organization (HCO), like us, now needs to be a registered HCA.

To become a Registered Home Care Aide in the State of California, you must:

Once the application process is completed, all HCAs must:

  • Complete 5 hours of entry-level training (2 hours of orientation and 3 hours of training)
  • Complete 5 hours of annual training (with verification) by an approved training organization
For all Home Instead CAREGiversSM, our internal training meets all of these requirements, so there is no need to pay for independent training to meet their requirement.

Why Was This Law Enacted?

The HCSCPA is intended to “promote consumer protection for elderly and disabled individuals who hire aides to come into their homes and provide assistance with activities of daily living.”

For over 20 years, Home Instead Senior Care has been dedicated to protecting seniors and providing the best possible experience for our clients and their families. For this purpose, we are happy to see an elevated expectation for Home Care Organizations and higher accountabilities for Home Care Aides. When it comes to those we love most in life, being safer and more responsible is a positive step forward.
