Advancing how we care for those with memory loss.

While medical research works towards treatments for memory issues like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, there have also been advances in how we care for those living with memory loss. With guidance from Dr. Lakelyn Hogan-Eichenberger, Home Instead’s
on-staff gerontologist, we’ve developed a person-centered approach to memory support, uniquely designed to:

  • Care for the whole person.
  • Honor your loved one’s life before their cognitive decline.
  • Help them continue to enjoy activities and hobbies they love.
  • Compassionately respond to cognitive and behavioral symptoms.
  • Help enhance safety in the home environment.
  • Review and adjust care plans as needs change.

Compassionate care begins with a thoughtful care plan.

Over the years, one thing has been clear: no two people experience memory loss the same way. That’s why we take the time to understand your loved one’s needs, routines, and story—so we can create an in-home memory care plan that truly fits your family.

In-home memory care FAQs

Every staff member receives dementia training annually. Some members of our team have also earned the Alzheimer’s Association’s essentiALZ® certification.

That training supports a need we encounter frequently in Rhode Island. Someone experiencing memory loss may need additional patience, reassurance, and redirection to participate in familiar activities and routines.

For someone experiencing memory loss, insisting on completing an activity a certain way can sometimes increase frustration.

Our Care Pros may instead slow down, redirect the person’s attention, and help them reconnect with an activity or routine they can enjoy. Patience is an important part of that approach.

All of our staff complete annual dementia training, with some also holding essentiALZ® certification through the Alzheimer’s Association.

Yes. Our team works with Hope Alzheimer’s Center in connection with memory support.

We also support Hope Alzheimer’s Center and the Alzheimer’s Association through our community involvement. These connections are especially relevant in a community where our team sees many families affected by dementia.

Yes. When memory loss progresses to the point that someone needs continuous support, our team can arrange 24-hour care.

A typical schedule may use two 12-hour or three 8-hour periods. Care Pros pass information from one person to the next, and the Care Pro currently providing support remains until the next scheduled person arrives.

That continuity can be particularly important for someone already coping with memory loss.

Cost depends on the amount of support needed and the schedule. Someone receiving several visits each week will have a different plan from a person requiring continuous care.

Our Providence team builds care around the individual’s current needs rather than using one standard dementia schedule.
