Advancing how we care for those with memory loss.

While medical research works towards treatments for memory issues like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, there have also been advances in how we care for those living with memory loss. With guidance from Dr. Lakelyn Hogan-Eichenberger, Home Instead’s
on-staff gerontologist, we’ve developed a person-centered approach to memory support, uniquely designed to:

  • Care for the whole person.
  • Honor your loved one’s life before their cognitive decline.
  • Help them continue to enjoy activities and hobbies they love.
  • Compassionately respond to cognitive and behavioral symptoms.
  • Help enhance safety in the home environment.
  • Review and adjust care plans as needs change.

Compassionate care begins with a thoughtful care plan.

Over the years, one thing has been clear: no two people experience memory loss the same way. That’s why we take the time to understand your loved one’s needs, routines, and story—so we can create an in-home memory care plan that truly fits your family.

In-home memory care FAQs

After 150 hours of advanced training, CDP-certified Care Pros are equipped to take a person-centered approach to dementia care — reading between the lines when a client can no longer communicate clearly, recognizing that agitation is often an expression of unmet need, and responding in ways that de-escalate rather than intensify difficult moments.

In practice: a client with severe dementia was refusing care and expressing increasing agitation. A CDP-trained Care Pro recognized her love of music through an accidental birthday moment and made joy a daily part of her routine. The agitation eased. That is what advanced training makes possible.

Resistance to personal care is one of the most common questions we hear from Millburn families. The answer is rarely 'try harder' — it is usually 'try differently.' Our CDP-trained Care Pros are equipped to reframe personal care in ways that feel safe and inviting rather than clinical and intrusive.

One of our Care Pros arranged a bathroom as a 'spa day' instead of a shower for a client with dementia who refused to bathe. The family had tried everything. Suddenly, he couldn't wait. That kind of creative, trained intuition is what 150 hours of dementia certification develops.

We facilitate the Virtual Dementia Tour — a training program for community partners that simulates what it is like to live with dementia. The program has been offered through Explore MSH and the Millburn Chamber of Commerce and has upskilled staff from organizations across the area.

We believe that better-informed community partners lead to better outcomes for clients.
