No Experience Caregiver Jobs in Baton Rouge: What We Train and What We Don’t

You can apply for caregiver jobs in Baton Rouge and gain these skills on the job. For example, we teach Care Pros how to transfer clients, communication skills if a client has dementia, how to prompt a client to eat if they’re losing their appetite, and how to complete Daily Reporting. Of course, each Care Pro is trained on different skills based on the clients they serve. If you have a passion for caring and helping others, learn new skills quickly, and are patient, you can succeed in this field!

You probably have more experience than you realize. For example, if you worked as a waitress on Airline Highway, you know what it is like to stay on your feet all day and how to anticipate your customers’ needs. You’ve also learned what to do to help your customers get through an often challenging and and sometimes embarrassing experience.

As a caregiver, you learn to have patience and help someone through an often difficult and sometimes embarrassing experience, like eating, using the bathroom, and getting dressed. You may sometimes even need to assist someone in transferring from their bed to a wheelchair. Care Pros serve and assist their clients in many of the activities of daily living.

We know new Care Pros often don’t have all the skills required to serve as caregivers, which is why we provide them training. We help them understand the skills required to be a caregiver, and how to communicate with a client that is living with memory loss and other Dementia related changes. Care Pros are trained how to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for their clients.

Documentation also plays an important role in caregiving. It’s important to understand how to document caregiving activities in a way that provides useful information. Caregiving is more than completing activities.

Home Instead Baton Rouge looks for certain qualities in their Caregivers beyond work experience.

What You Will Bring

Some aspects of caregiving are more difficult to teach.

For example, caregivers are expected to arrive on time to meet clients. Caregiving is not a profession where repeated last-minute cancellations and no-shows are acceptable. If you have a care-related issue, you can’t simply find a different client to take care of.

Every client is different, and you may need to assist a client in caring for themselves in ways that require you to take extra time and/or assist them in performing activities that may require extra assistance.

It is also important to have a good driving record because part of being a caregiver is being able to transport yourself to the location where your caregiving services are needed.

Home Instead can teach caregivers the skills needed to be a caregiver, but we can't teach people to care about others.

Where Our Best Caregivers Usually Come From

We hire people who have a wide variety of skills and work experience.

Many retail and restaurant skills are transferable. Things like interacting with and helping different people, multitasking and staying organized are valuable skills.

Working in a restaurant and dealing with a heavy rush helps prepare you for a similar work environment by teaching you how to efficiently and effectively maintain composure and control while concentrating on several tasks.

Working in child care helps build the skills needed to be attentive to and take care of the needs of another.

Working towards becoming a CNA helps prepare you for building skills in caring for others, but not completing the program does not disqualify you from caring and support roles.

Later on in your career, you may want to also help care for others. One of our guides about caregiver jobs for retirees may help with additional information on getting into this line of work.

We are primarily interested in the skills and experience you gained during your employment and how they help you with your caregiver role.

Our main concern is how your past and current jobs help you care for individuals in your community.

We will tell you what is expected of you. During the first two weeks of your employment, we will help you build the skills required to perform your job. During this time, you will work with an established caregiver to gain a better understanding of how the skills help in caring for clients.

You'll be assigned your own client after completing the shadowing process.

The assignment is important because caregiving in a client’s home is not the same as caregiving in a training setting. Our caregivers quickly learn the tasks required to perform their jobs, but we also expect them to learn other important skills such as maintaining an appropriate pace, communicating appropriately, and keeping a care log.

Do I have to have senior care experience?

No. It is not a requirement for the caregiver opportunity described here to have previous senior care experience. We have caregiver training to help our caregivers learn various activities including proper techniques for caregiver transfers, communication with clients with dementia, and other related tasks.

These skills include being on time and reliable, having a high tolerance for stress and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations, and having a clean driving record and the ability to pass a background check. All of these skills can be learned through other customer service and/or people focused jobs.

Are positions in the food or retail industry caregiver positions?

Yes, absolutely. Employees in both of those industries have to interact with and manage numerous customers in a given day. Care management is similar in the aspect that you have to manage multiple client's needs in a day while prioritizing.

Is it possible that I will be working by myself?

Not while you are still in training. During your first two weeks with the company you will be trained and work with other caregivers before being assigned your own clients.

How can I be considered for a job as a caregiver?

Look over our openings in Baton Rouge and see if there is one that works with your availability and then apply. Don't discount yourself because of your previous employment. If you have worked in the food and/or retail industries, or in childcare or other direct customer service positions, you have skills that transfer to this position.
