Early-Morning Caregiver Jobs in Baton Rouge: What 6-to-10 AM Shifts Involve

Written By: Kelee King

As a Baton Rouge early-morning caregiver, you may assist an individual with the beginning of their day, which may include any or all of the following: breaking breakfast, getting ready to leave for the day, and/or getting ready to go to appointments or activities. If you are interested in Baton Rouge early-morning caregiver positions, you should understand that the start of your work day will be synchronous with the start of the individual’s day.

A 6 AM or 10 AM start time may seem flexible, but you must keep in mind that you will be requiring the individual to begin their day at that time and there may not be any leeway. You should evaluate whether you will be able to consistently require the individual to begin their day at that time and be ready to perform the duties of your position.

Typical non-medical tasks between 6 AM and 10 AM may include:

  • Assisting with personal care tasks
  • Assisting with household activities
  • Assisting with meals
  • Offering timely reminders
  • Preparing to engage in, and assisting with, travel to, and activities outside the home.

Task assignment may vary. Care Pros should become familiar with the Care Plans developed by the employer for each assigned individual in order to determine the task assignment for the day.

You should become familiar with the tasks assigned by the employer for each of your individual clients, as you may not be able to assume that your clients will need the same, or similar, tasks performed for them each morning.

If you’re thinking about the Care Pro opportunity, consider your level of flexibility working within the confines of an established routine. Rigid adherence to one’s schedule may not work when you’re considering the needs of others.

Why is Punctuality Important for Morning Routines?

We need to be clear that 6AM means a 6AM start.

Activities in the morning are frequently time constrained. You may need to leave for school at a particular time to eat breakfast. Clothing may need to be put on to leave for school at a particular time.

Arriving to work at 6:30am may mean your entire day starts 30 minutes behind.

This is why it’s important for a potential employee to understand the constraints of an early shift and what may be required of them.

Do you have reliable transportation to get you where you need to be at the required time?

Are there constraints on your end that would require you to be lat at your own start time?

Are there activities that you must do to get other family members prepared to be out the door at a certain time?

Activities that require you to be a caregiver in the morning are very different from activities that require caregiving in the evening. The timing of caregiving is very important.

What activities may you need to do to give yourself a head start to ensure you’re prepared and on time to start your client off on the right foot?

Being an in-home caregiver has a lot of advantages, and the flexibility to work personalized care schedules is probably one of the best. It gives you an opportunity to build a relationship with your client the way you build a relationship with a family member. Because of this, you will have a clear understanding of your client’s breakfast preference and the sequence in which they prefer to perform their daily activities.

Know your limits.

It is important to follow the care plan, and, if the client wishes for you to perform a task in a different way, you should explain your rationale for performing the task a certain way. Listening to a client’s needs and adapting to them are skills every caregiver should possess.

You should not make an assumption about why something has changed. Just because a client asked you to do something outside your scope of practice doesn’t mean you can’t do something to help. Communicate with the office, and if something has to be done outside your scope of practice, let the office manage it.

You should have a general understanding of what is expected of you, as well as what your responsibilities will be. The Baton Rouge Home Instead office can provide you with this information. You can set constraints on when you are available to work, and if your constraints work within the hours a client needs care, you should be given the opportunity to work. When you agree to work within the constraints provided by the client, you should communicate these to Home Instead.

If you’re unable to work mornings, or unavailable on certain days, make sure you communicate that clearly. If your schedule makes it impossible to work an assignment on a given day, make sure to explain that as well.

Explaining your constraints during the application and scheduling processes will avoid disappointment and possibly resentment from the employer and the client for breaking an agreement.

Make sure you understand how your employer will address changes in the client’s schedule.

The same rules about flexible scheduling will apply if you want to take on a second job, home health care.

Working a morning shift will only be advantageous if the shifts work with your schedule and if you are able to make yourself available to work the shift.

Frequently Asked Questions About Morning Caregiver Jobs in Baton Rouge

What time do morning caregiver shifts end?

As noted earlier, shifts are customizable. If you can’t work a shift that extends into the afternoon, let the care agency know what time you can work.

Do you have to be a "morning person" to work a morning shift?

No, you just need to be on time. If you find it difficult to be up at 6 AM, then consider a different shift.

Will helping a client get dressed be part of my normal daily tasks?

No. Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) will vary according to a client’s individual care plan. Some clients may require assistance with all ADLs while others may only need a reminder to perform various activities. It may also include breakfast and/or assistance with other household routines to prepare for going out.

Is it possible to work a morning caregiver job and a different job later in the day?

Probably. Factors that may be considered are the caregiver assignment hours and your other work/family commitments.

What do I have to do to work a morning caregiver job in Baton Rouge?

Look for open positions with Home Instead in Baton Rouge for morning shifts. Go over the details of the process with regard to client assignment, scheduled breaks, care plan details, and how the caregiver is notified of changes.
