CAREGiver Never Gives Up

Award-winning CAREGiver Milagros Jennings never gives up trying to please a client. And family caregivers trying to coax an older adult to eat might want to take note of her innovative methods.

Pizza slice + blender = tasty meal. That was Milagros’ formula for success on a day when she was struggling to get a client to eat.

“I have a client who is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s,” explained the CAREGiver of the Month for Home Instead Senior Care® of Anchorage. “His wife is very loving to him. She decided one day to order pizza for him because he refused to eat all day.

“I cut the pizza in small pieces and tried to feed him, but he still didn’t want anything. I didn’t quit – I wanted to see if I could get him to eat. So I decided to use a blender. I put a slice in and scrambled it up and tried to feed him again. This time I didn’t have a problem getting him to eat. So I blended another slice, and he ate all of it. I felt 100 percent great about the whole situation.”

The client’s wife, of course, told Milagros how happy she was. But the client’s wife already knew how valuable Milagros is. “Every time that I arrive,” Milagros said, “she is happy and tells me that she knows that her husband is in very good hands.”

So Milagros not only provides caregiving for the client, but she is an important respite resource for his wife. “She goes out, does her errands, takes care of herself and just in general takes a break,” noted Milagros, who spends at least 32 hours a week with her client.

The man is the only regular client for Milagros, who has been with Home Instead for six months. Nevertheless, she is a caregiving veteran. She has worked in senior care for 32 years while formerly owning three assisted care communities for 15 years and serving as the administrator.

Milagros’ deft caregiving touch with her client demonstrates that she is familiar with dementia care, and she also happens to be working for a non-medical senior care company that is recognized as among the world’s best for Alzheimer’s care. “One of the primary challenges of working with a dementia client is being able to redirect him or her to do something else with a calm and warm voice,” Milagros said. “As a CAREGiver, my promise to the clients and their families is that I will do everything in my power to keep them safe, promote their social activity and tend to their daily needs. My faith plays a major role to my approach and how I handle my clients with trust, respect and dignity.”

Perhaps it is by no coincidence that Milagros spotted the Home Instead office at 440 W. Benson Blvd. and felt prompted to find out about owner Stacee Frost Kleinsmith’s franchise.

“I live about 10 minutes from the Home Instead office and was driving by it all the time while going to my other job,” Milagros recalled. “I decided one day to stop and check into it.

“I am glad I did, because the Home Instead staff is like one family that works so well with clients and CAREGivers,” she added.

“I am so honored to be selected for CAREGiver of the Month, and I thanked the staff. I am willing to do whatever it takes to help my clients and build the franchise as strong as possible.”
