"The staff is caring and kind...just what we wanted for our aunt who wants to remain as independent as possible. I recommend!
In 2004, when franchise owner Jane Urban established Home Instead Senior Care of West Hartford, CT, which serves surrounding areas including Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Bloomfield, and Windsor, non-medical home care was not a household word. Most people were not aware of this service for seniors who prefer to age in place at home, rather than uproot to assisted living or nursing facilities. Eight years later, Home Instead Senior Care continues to provide in-home, non-medical assistance in not only private homes but in residences across the continuum of senior living including apartments, condos, assisted living communities and even skilled nursing facilities. Offering companionship, homemaking, and personal assistance services, Home Instead’s of West Hartford's CAREGivers provide seniors the extra support that means the difference between living independently and moving to more restrictive situations.
After 25 years as an IT professional in large corporate environments, Jane longed for the elusive mid-life ‘second career’ and to run a business by her own rules. On her way to work one morning, Jane heard an NPR business report on our growing senior population and the emerging senior care industry. The report spotlighted Home Instead Senior Care, one of fastest-growing franchises in 2003, as an industry leader offering non-medical companionship and support to help seniors live independently in their homes for as long as possible. This business report started Jane on her way to a new business adventure.
As the Baby Boomer daughter of aging parents, Jane connected on a personal level with Home Instead Senior Care of West Hartford, CT’s mission and services. She and her friends often shared their challenging experiences with juggling job, family, personal life, and care for aging parents. Like many people, she dreamed of being her own boss but still enjoyed working with professionals in a large organization. Home Instead Senior Care, with 500 offices and a proven franchise concept, offered Jane the best of both local, small business ownership and world-class expertise. Most importantly, the senior home care industry would provide Jane with the opportunity to apply her personal vision, experience, expertise, and energy to helping seniors and their families.
In the summer of 2004, Jane resigned her corporate position, formed an LLC (appropriately named Janesway, LLC), and purchased her franchise license. She opened Home Instead Senior Care of West Hartford, CT at 2446 Albany Avenue near Bishop’s Corner, a neighborhood filled with seniors who could benefit from caring, reliable support from professional, knowledgeable CAREGivers. Jane was soon busy recruiting and training local CAREGivers, networking with area senior care professionals, and learning about the needs of seniors in her area.
Since Ms. Urban opened her franchise office, Home Instead Senior Care of West Hartford, CT has grown to over 950 franchises in 15 countries, with over 65,000 CAREGivers world-wide. Over the last eight years, Ms. Urban has seen tremendous growth in the number and type of service businesses catering to seniors. “Lots of people want to try an elder care business because of the huge market potential.” says Ms. Urban. “But they don’t realize that caring for seniors is much more than markets and dollars. Providing quality service requires a personal commitment to clients, families and employees.”
Ms. Urban credits the success of Home Instead Senior Care of West Hartford, CT to her personal commitment to quality. A hands-on manager, she knows each and every CAREGiver, and client, and she communicates regularly with them and client family members. “People want to feel confident their loved one is being cared for the way they would if they could be there.” says Urban. “When their parent is in need, the last thing they want to hear is the voice of the ‘on-call’ person who may not even have met the client. With us, they know the person handling their parent’s care isn’t learning about them from a case file. They know them personally.”
