Seniors with diabetes

“Oftentimes the holidays can be a reminder of foods that some of us aren’t able to indulge in, but it’s good to keep in mind the foods that you can have, and that can have great benefits to your health at the same time,” says Home Instead Green Bay Branch Manager, Catherine Hougard.  “Here’s a list of ten foods described by the American Diabetes Association as “diabetes superfoods.””

1. Berries – a sweet treat that won’t elevate blood sugar levels too much
2. Skim Milk and Fat-Free Yogurt – helpful for maintaining bone health
3. Citrus Fruits – with the exception of grapefruit
4. Sweet Potatoes – they don’t cause the post-meal blood sugar spikes the way white and red potatoes do
5. Whole Grains – they’re a good source of fiber
6. Tomatoes – they’re loaded with Vitamins C and E
7. Dark Leafy Greens – seniors who take blood-thinning medication should avoid dark leafy greens, though
8. Beans – they’re packed with fiber
9. Fatty Fish – a great source for Omega-3 fatty acids
10. Nuts – the protein they provide can help keep blood sugar levels stable
