Shirley Is a Reluctant Hero Who ‘Just Does Her Job’

Caregiver of the Month Shirley

Shirley Turner admits she’s uncomfortable with her CAREGiver of the Month honor with the award-winning Home Instead® franchise owned by Pietro Jordao and Dillon Rice. Shirley, a humble sort, insists she doesn’t know what the big deal is.

“Thank you for wanting to write a story about me. I don’t think I deserve it, but thanks to all who were involved in the nominating and evaluation process. I’m just happy to do my job,” said Shirley, who was with Home Instead of Victoria for fewer than six months before she was selected as the August CAREGiver of the Month.

Recruiting and Retention Coordinator Maegan Coldewey said: “Shirley and our two other most recent CAREGivers of the Month are new to us at Home Instead. But they left the gate in a sprint, ready for their challenges, eager to work and unafraid of hard work. All three of these ladies already have taken on many hours in very demanding situations and have excelled beyond my expectations. We are blessed to have them all on our team.”

Shirley has fashioned a professional home-care career of more than 15 years, and she feels blessed to work with Home Instead. She offered these thoughts:

  • “Home Instead is a very good small company.”
  • “I like the hours and the pay. The office helps with getting you as many hours as you want. It is what I am looking for. Traveling a distance to clients is fine.”
  • “I like the people in our Home Instead office, who are really sweet, really nice down-to-earth people who will help you in any way they can.”
  • “I haven’t met all of our franchise’s CAREGivers, but I like the ones out there who do teamwork with me for client care.”

Referring to family caregiving and benevolent caregiving work, Shirley explained: “I have taken care of other people who became part of my life like my family. I have reciprocated with care for my friends’ family members. For instance, my best friend took care of my grandmother. Professionally, I love doing the job, and there are a lot of seniors out there who are in need. I’m a very caring person.”

Hinting at possible future karma that would involve her own situation as a potentially needy senior, Shirley pointed out: “One day, I might need help, and I hope God will send someone to help me who is like me now, someone who handles all the caregiving challenges compassionately as I do now.”

At Home Instead of Victoria, Shirley and her fellow CAREGivers are members of a network founded in 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska. Home Instead is the world’s leading provider of in-home care services for seniors, with more than 1,200 independently owned and operated franchises that provide more than 90 million hours of care annually throughout the United State and 13 other countries. It isn’t hard to see Shirley lives the Home Instead principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.”

Shirley is among more than 100,000 Home Instead CAREGivers worldwide, and she has helped add to those numbers because of her strong belief in Home Instead’s purpose and core values. Those core values are: Honor God in all we do; Treat each other with dignity and respect; Encourage growth in ourselves and others; Build value in our service to others.”
