Norma’s Caregiving Impact Is Immediate

On a toasty West Texas day last June, Norma Pando was invited to work for Home Instead® of Midland-Odessa. On Sept. 29, Norma was named the franchise’s Care Professional of the Month for September. Imelda Hawkins was not surprised. The long-time assistant administrator and recruitment and engagement coordinator had watched as Norma’s compassionate heart won over each of her clients.

“In a few short months, she has been so impressive that we just couldn’t withhold this honor from her,” said Imelda, who announced Norma’s selection on behalf of the award-winning Permian Basin franchise that serves Big Spring, Lamesa, Tahoka, Grandview, Lenorah, Gardendale, Goldsmith and West Odessa in addition to Midland and Odessa.

“Norma is highly motivated and self-driven. She delivers such a great effort in getting to know her clients and understanding their needs that you can’t help but notice. Norma is a highly sought-after Care Pro, especially from our Spanish-speaking clients, because she puts her heart and soul into caring for her clients.”

Among the considerations for achieving Care Pro of the Month status, an employee has shown he or she has gone above and beyond the call of duty, Imelda said while praising Norma’s efforts. Empathy and compassion are taken into account for the award, as well as skill and wisdom for dealing with challenging situations. Norma clearly lives the Home Instead’s guiding principles of  “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.”

In addition to her strong companionship skills, Norma provides safety assurance, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and transportation and errands. Norma and other Midland-Odessa Care Pros offer personal assistance with eating, grooming, dressing, bathing, incontinence care, dementia support, cognitive impairment, hospice support and mobility. By expertly doing so, the Care Pros not only assist their clients, but help their clients’ families eliminate worry, reduce stress and re-establish personal freedom.

To build on their knowledge and experience, Norma and other Midland-Odessa Care Pros are offered the opportunity to increase their dementia-care skills by taking part in the Home Instead network’s one-of-a-kind training protocol. Home Instead’s Person-Centered Care Training for Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association® for incorporating the evidence-based dementia-care practice recommendations in these topic areas: Alzheimer’s and dementia, person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and behaviors and communication.

Norma loves being a part of the Care Pro team for the Midland-Odessa franchise, a member of a network comprised of Home Instead, Inc. and its parent company, Honor. With the world’s largest home-care network and the most advanced care platform, Honor and Home Instead are revolutionizing care for older adults, their families and Care Pros. Combined, the network has more than 100,000 Care Pros across 13 countries, meeting the growing needs of millions of older adults and their families worldwide.

Lorena and William Shensky have been the Home Instead franchise’s co-owners at Midland-Odessa since March 1, 2020. Imelda joined Home Instead as a Care Pro in 2014, was honored as the Care Pro of the Month in April 2015 and moved into her staff position in June 2016.
