Faith Is at the Center of Doris’s Work

Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month Doris Anyanjor-Jombo’s job and attention to its senior-care details are intertwined with her spiritual faith. That is what makes her an outstanding companion for her clients at the award-winning Home Instead franchise in Midland-Odessa.

“My faith is very important to me. It is in my heart, and I have it in my heart to help others because of my faith. I believe God led me to this point in my life. God’s will is crucial in my life. I have been asked, ‘Do you love God?’ The answer is always, ‘Yes, I do.’ How can you love God and not want the best for others?” Doris said.

A component of Doris’s faith was tested when she lost a dear client just three weeks ago. “She was a very nice woman. I did all I could for her. The hard part of the job is losing a client. In many ways, it felt like losing my grandmother. We would say what we wanted to do together that day, and then we would do it,” Doris explained.

“She asked me to pray for her before she passed away. I said, ‘Yes, of course.’ As her life was coming to an end, I knew she needed nutrition for both her body and soul. Her physical hunger was waning, but I wanted to find something she would accept to eat. I wanted to strengthen her as much as possible and have her feel happy and at peace. Those were the goals.”

Assistant Administrator and Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Imelda Hawkins has frequently celebrated Doris’s presence since she joined Home Instead on a warm June day in 2021. “Her strong faith in God had led her down a path to provide gracious care to our seniors in a compassionate, trustworthy and loving way. Doris loves listening to gospel music and is pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. We absolutely love Doris!” said Imelda, who announced Doris was honored as the Care Pro of the Month for October.

Assisting seniors was not an unfamiliar experience for Doris when she joined the Home Instead franchise owned by Lorena and William Shensky.

“More than eight years ago, I took care of my grandmother for the months that she required care until she passed away,” Doris recalled. “She told me what she needed and what she wanted to do, and that’s how I proceeded. I took her to the hospital and fulfilled her other medical needs. I cooked for her. I did my best for her. I was splitting time between taking care of my grandmother and my own family.”

It wasn’t easy, but Doris added: “Caregiving is important in our family.”

Doris explained the fulfillment she receives from helping seniors this way: “The best part of my job is doing my job so well that the clients are happy and comfortable when I am there. Being kind to people is something you always should do. You must meet their needs while understanding what the priorities are and while being always kind. That is the best way. To be a good caregiver, you must make sure the client has happiness. If necessary, treat them like a newborn who must receive your full attention and nothing less. In some cases, their very safety depends on your attention and reactions,” Doris said.

Doris loves being a part of the Care Pro team for the West Texas franchise, a member of a network comprised of Home Instead, Inc. and its parent company, Honor. With the world’s largest home-care network and the most advanced care platform, Honor and Home Instead are revolutionizing care for older adults, their families and Care Pros.
