Superfoods For Seniors and there Nutrition Care

Written By: Tom Crowe

There is no silver bullet for eternal life and perfect health, not even for those with excellent senior care. Studio City, CA residents have a great chance for a long, healthy, and happy life with the aid of the CAREGivers of Home Instead.

But the fact remains that even those with the best senior day care or 24-hour caregiver in Studio City, CA still need great nutrition care to keep up their health. Paying attention to nutrition in elderly care can really help with mental acuity, maintaining a good metabolism, feeling good with a high activity level, and other good things.

Health care providers certainly can provide great overall diet recommendations. For some with chronic health conditions, these may be more than just recommendations — they may be doctor’s orders.

But there are some “superfoods” out there that, if any doctor involved doesn’t have a reason to avoid them, can provide some real health benefits to those in residential assisted living. Studio City, CA seniors should investigate these and other “superfoods” if they’re looking for a boost.

But first, what is a superfood? Superfood is a term used for those foods — whether grains, berries, other fruits, or vegetables — that have some extraordinary properties. These properties provide a significant benefit to the health of the person in specific ways.

So, what are some of these superfoods? The first we’ll mention is blueberries. Simple blueberries contain a significant number of antioxidants. Antioxidants promote cellular health, especially bone cells, which is great to stave off osteoporosis. They also are a great source of Vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system. Also, blueberries are just delicious. Add them to pancakes, muesli, corn flakes, or whatever other cereal you must get that healthy punch in the morning.

Another superfood is the whole category of dark green leafy vegetables: spinach, kale, swiss chard, arugula. These also have a significant number of antioxidants, plus a large amount of Vitamin K. Vitamin K helps prevent blood clots and osteoporosis. Leafy green vegetables also include folate, magnesium, and potassium, three things essential to the body functioning well.

Another category of helpful vegetables is the “cruciferous” vegetables. These are high in fiber, which is great for the digestion, they help us to feel full, which helps with weight loss, and they help protect against damage to DNA, which can prevent cancer. The best of this category is Brussels sprouts, which can do the trick by eating only four to six of them. Some people struggle with Brussels sprouts, so broccoli or cauliflower can also do the trick. But with any of them, roasting them at about 400 degrees, with some olive oil, salt and pepper, and garlic powder, can really make them amazing.

There are many other superfoods out there waiting to be worked into your health-conscious diet. Check with your doctor, and work with your CAREGiver from Home Instead to put together a menu that will delight the taste buds and improve your life!
