Skills We Nurture in Every CAREGiver

Home Instead’s pioneering training program includes four levels of knowledge and skill building to ensure that each caregiving professional we hire is ready to serve clients in their homes while building a thoughtful relationship with family members and other loved ones.

  • First we provide safety training including basic home safety, cautious cleaning practices, disease prevention, kitchen safety, outdoor hazards to avoid, pain and strain prevention, safe driving practices, and slip and fall prevention.

  • Next we provide basic emergency training for various situations including falls, fractures, strokes and sudden illness. While our CAREGivers are not medical professionals, we make sure they know how to react in these situations. We also make sure they know how to communicate effectively with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. Additionally, CAREGivers learn about positive activities to engage in with seniors, spotting signs of abuse, and various tips for housekeeping, mealtime, and reducing stress for all caregivers.

  • A more advanced layer of training also covers common senior illnesses and chronic health conditions, exercise moves for older adults at home, strategies for addressing senior depression, tips to make the mealtime experience more enjoyable, and tips for communicating effectively with the senior and their family as well as the entire team.

  • We also provide activity training before CAREGivers begin working in clients’ homes. This includes learning about engaging activities such as gardening and crafts, how to encourage hobbies and reignite old passions in seniors, activities for reminiscing, mind building activities, community involvement, and activities that can be modified for various impairments and changing needs.
