Creighton Gibson, Franchise Owner

I am self employed now after working for J.C. Steele and Sons for 16 years, after going through years of health issues with my mother and father I took a big leap of faith and started this business.

Home Instead, we are independently owned and operated, but we are the largest non-medical provider of companionship and help for the elderly in the world. There are over 20 offices in N.C. and over 1,100 offices world wide, in Canada, USA and Japan. All of our Care Professionals are thoroughly screened, trained and bonded, they are my employees and I pay all taxes, workman compensation and we also require a minimum of six references and we do a criminal background check and driving record check.

I will always take my Care Professionals to the client the first time to ensure the most peace of mind and this also makes the meeting as stress free as possible.

Heather Oland, General Manager

Hello! I have been with Home Instead since May of 2016. I have an extensive background in Health Care, gaining experience from many different environments ranging from Home Care, ALF, Alzheimer's Units, Geri psych and Correctional Facilities. My journey brought me back to Home Care because I am an avid believer in "aging in comfort". I have active involvement in our Alzheimer's association team "To Us It's Personal",  the Statesville Leading Ladies Group through the Statesville Chamber of Commerce as well as serving on the board of the Greater Statesville Rotary Club as secretary. I am also a member of the Hearing Loss Association of America where I advocate for my daughter with hearing impairment. When I am not servicing our senior community, I can always be found along side of those I love most, kayaking, fishing or cheering along the side lines of a baseball, soccer or softball game.

Deborah Hillard, RN, BSN, Director of Client Care

Deborah Hillard, RN, BSN, Director of Client Care

I have always wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a little girl. I think it was just second nature for me. I used to pretend I was taking my father's Vital Signs with my little nurse's kit. Great fun! Throughout the years my interest grew into something more serious. For me the most important and underlying facet of my nursing career has been nursing as a mission and career that started as a Candy Striper at the age of 13 and Nurse's Aide at age 14. I had the unique opportunity to witness my first baby being born at 14 and my first dying patient during nursing school at 17. I attended Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in St Louis Missouri for my 3 yr Diploma as a student in the last 3 yr class at that hospital-based school. I joined the Air Force Nurse Corp after a year working at Barnes in neuro-medicine, met my husband and lived in Germany for 6 years, had 2 wonderful sons Mark and Erik. Traveled the world so to speak. I also attended Valdosta State College in Valdosta Georgia to receive my BSN Degree prior to going overseas. The experiences I have had as a nurse have certainly been unique anywhere from Medical Surgical, Pediatric, Neuro- medicine, US Air Force Nurse Corp, Red Cross Volunteer teaching Hypertension at the base clinic, physical assessments of children in a very remote village called Chermaitre Haiti with the Vassar Haiti Project, to home care. When I moved to New York I decided I wanted to try something different and decided to apply for a Nurse Case Manager's position at Fishkill Health Inc, in Beacon NY, later known as Elant. Little did I know that that decision was going to greatly influence my career path for the next 26 years. Home Care gave me the opportunity to use a wide variety of skills on a more one-to-one basis which is what most nurses like. I have worked in the capacity of a nurse case manager, clinical coordinator, and Director of a Long Term Home Health Care Program. When people ask me why I moved to Statesville, I tell them I moved to be closer to my son who is in Charleston and I have a friend who also moved here. If you ask me why I chose Home Instead, I will tell you I was impressed with the focus of this agency right from the very beginning. "To us ,it's personal" and that is exactly the way I see my chosen career path, nursing as a mission.

Kayla Bass, CNA, Client Care Administrative Assistant

My name is Kayla and for most of my life I’ve been a CAREGiver, even before knew what the word really meant I was taking care of those

I've had few roles with Home Instead starting as CAREGiver, then going to Lead CAREGiver then our Inquiry Specialist to August 2021 Recruitment Coordinator and August 2022 our Client Care Administrative Support/Assistant. Valerie Mills, RN, Client Care Coordinator

Valerie Mills, RN, Client Care Coordinator

Hello! I am a UNC-Charlotte Bachelor of Science Registered Nurse who absolutely loves to educate and empower individuals to optimize their total state of health – spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. In the year 2000 I began studying Natural Health to resolve some health challenges that originated during infancy. Since then I have completed a Doctor of Natural Health degree, Certification of Natural Health Professional, Professional Herbalism, Graduate Certification in Nutrition, Clinical Herbalism, and Nutritional Therapy. I resigned from the acute hospital setting role as Educator / eLearning Specialist in 2016 to pursue my passion to work in Natural Health & Wellness. Prior to arriving to Home Instead Senior Care, I was functioning as a True Cellular Detox Nutrition Coach in a functional nutrition clinic.

So how did I arrive to Home Instead Senior Care? That is a great question! In the process of now building my Education Wellness Coaching practice, HISC affords the opportunity to have flexible hours, hear great stories from the clients, and work with a team of amazing people.

I enjoy riding go-karts, playing laser tag, mowing the lawn with my zero turn lawn mower, working in my raised-bed gardens, and best of all – spending time with my family.

Jonathon Detusa, On Call Supervisor

My name is Jonathon, however, I prefer Jo. I am originally from Rhode Island, my parents moved our family down when I was in 1st grade, and I lived here in Northern Iredell until 2018 when I decided to move back to R.I. to start a new journey. I was there until late 2020 when my mother fell ill. I made the decision move us back down Northern Iredell to be with the family we have down here, especially my grandparents who getting up there in age. What inspired me to become a CAREGiver is my mother, she worked as a private CAREGiver for a family. I unfortunately tore my ACL early 2020 before COVID invited themselves in, was out of work until late 2020 and after returning my knee could no longer handle the physical demands as a Dollar General Store Manager. I had always saw commercials for Home Instead here, up north, and on any device through many years. I decided to change careers from retail to home care and it was the best decision I had made! I started out CAREGiving and I decided to take the On Call Supervisor in the office Dec. 2021. I oversee the after hours phones, scheduling, assist with technology in the office, and wherever I am needed. I have an open heart and I love to help everyone as much as I can. You can always reach me on my work cell phone or email, I will be happy to help as much as my abilities allow.
Jo may be reached by calling 704.912.5927 or via email at

Louise Grose, Service Coordinator

I have experience with caregiving from several different perspectives- as a daughter looking for 24-hr care for my father, a daughter-in-law serving as caregiver for my husband's parents, and as a Home Instead Care Pro. I feel that I can use this experience in my new role as Scheduling Coordinator. My goal is to match Care Pros with clients who will meet all expectations, "just like in the commercials", as a client said to me once. I am excited to begin my new role with Home Instead.
I am a graduate of North Carolina State University, married with two grown sons, and I live on a farm in northern Iredell county. We raise cattle and sheep and have 10 free-range chickens. When I get home from work, I am greeted enthusiastically by my two dogs, and ignored by several cats... until feeding time!
