Father’s Medical Challenge Prepared Lauren to Be a Care Pro

As a family caregiver, Lauren Brown came to her father’s aid when she was needed most. Was it a baptism by fire in an abrupt home-care role? Maybe and maybe not – Lauren reacted in a calm, collected manner to a challenging situation with compassion, patience and an eagerness to learn as each day passed. Four years later, Lauren was honored as Care Professional of the Month at the award-winning Home Instead® franchise in Clawson, Michigan.

“My father had to have one of his legs amputated. For him, that was a major change, as well as going to therapy to gain back strength and learn how to adjust.” Lauren recalled.

“I was always there for him whenever he needed anything because he couldn’t do for himself as much as he formerly could. I took him to his appointments, helped cook meals, went grocery shopping and helped him with at-home physical therapy. It was a big change for our family at the time, but we got through it.”

Fast-forward to the summer of 2022. “I found Home Instead by searching the internet for in-home health care jobs. Home Instead instantly caught my attention. I had gotten a quick return call after completing the application online to schedule an interview. The orientation and hands-on training gave me the confidence I need for this job. I’ve been with Home Instead for a little more than a year,” Lauren said.

Thus began Lauren’s professional caregiving career. “I’ve also progressed into facility caregiving as well,” Lauren explained.

She added: “What I love most about being a Home Instead Care Pro is the opportunity to work with the clients to help with their needs and to be able to give them 110 percent of my efforts to build a bond and trust.”

Among the considerations for achieving Care Professional of the Month status, an employee has shown she has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Empathy and compassion are taken into account for the award, as well as skill and wisdom for dealing with challenging situations. Lauren embodies Home Instead’s guiding principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.” She is someone who is exceptional at her work with any client.

Focusing on Home Instead’s training, processes and procedures of successful caregiving also helped Lauren achieve Care Pro of the Month status. To build on their dementia-care skills knowledge and experience, Lauren and other Care Pros at Clawson are required to take part in the Home Instead network’s one-of-a-kind training protocol. Home Instead’s Person-Centered Care Training for Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association® for incorporating the evidence-based dementia-care practice recommendations in these topic areas: Alzheimer’s and dementia, person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and behaviors and communication.

“My favorite experiences with clients are when they tell me I have done a great job for them and that they always want me to return. There’s no better feeling than knowing the clients are satisfied with your work and want you to come back to care for them again,” Lauren said.

Lauren loves being a member of the Care Pro team for the Michigan franchise, owned by Bert and Stephanie Copple, and a member of a network comprised of Home Instead, Inc. and its parent company, Honor. With the world’s largest home-care network and the most advanced care platform, Honor and Home Instead are revolutionizing care for older adults, their families and Care Pros. Combined, the network has more than 100,000 Care Pros across 13 countries, meeting the growing needs of millions of older adults and their families worldwide.
