Birthday lunch at home. Quiet one. The caregiver showed up a few minutes early and had already prepped the kitchen by the time we sat down at the table near the window. Soft soup, a small plated salad, nothing rushed.

The folks at the office know me by name when I call now, and that has meant a lot over the past few months. My wife passed two years back and the quiet got to be a heavy thing, especially around birthdays. Turned 78 a few weeks ago on a Tuesday evening. The caregiver who comes by Mondays and Wednesdays remembered. Brought a small lemon cake she had picked up. Nothing fancy. We sat at the kitchen table by the window and ate slow. She had already made a chicken and rice dish earlier that I could heat up, and the kitchen was tidy when she left, the way my wife used to leave it. That kind of thing matters more than people know. Caregivers smile a lot, which sounds like a small detail but it lands different when you live alone. They have been steady about showing up on time, and when there was a schedule change one week somebody from the office called me directly to walk through it. No surprises. The woman who handles my visits is patient with my hearing and never rushes through the medicat

The process with Home Instead went smoothly. Kevin got our Mom set up ahead of time, so we could begin when she was ready, and he helped us solve problems quickly. The caregivers were warm, attentive, and capable. They clearly cared about Mom, and worked well with our whole family.

I reached out to Home Instead Seattle when I was looking for caregiver/companion service for my mother. She was in an excellent assisted living facility, but as with most of those organizations they are chronically understaffed even with my being there 3 days a week. Kevin came to meet my mother and me and made the effort to connect and get to know us in order to find the right person on his staff to fit personality, needs and interests. That attention to detail down to what kind of music Mom enjoyed and the compassion that prompts it came across and that truly matters. As it turned out the timing was fortuitous because my mother went onto hospice care shortly after we made arrangements. What I found out (and many other families do) was that even between excellent hospice and the assisted living there still wasn't much coverage. The Home Instead caregiver, Shania was extraordinary. I cannot imagine a better person to be with me and the hospice nurse on the day my mother passed away. She was calm, collected and it was like we'd been friends for years instead of just meeting. What Shania brought was beyond expertise. It was extraordinary kindness and immediate connection. I am sure it would have been a very different experience without her and that sort of care. My mother passed away peacefully and comfortably. Shania was critical in helping her and helping me when grief hits hard. She even took care of helping to organize the assisted living staff while I was dealing with the loss and contacting the rest of my family and even finding the right funeral home. I simply can't thank Home Instead enough and of course, I will always remember what they provided. It was truly a gift.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer—but if your loved one wants to stay in their own home, in-home care can be the most personal, flexible, and reassuring option.
In-home care vs. assisted living
Assisted living can be great for those who want a communal setting and are ready to relocate. But if your loved one wants to stay at home, in-home care offers:
- One-on-one attention in familiar surroundings
- A flexible schedule that fits your lifestyle
- Support with meals, mobility, personal care, and companionship
- Help from Care Pros who get to know your loved one—building trust and routine
In-home care vs. hiring a private caregiver
Hiring an independent caregiver can seem less expensive—but it comes with risk. As the employer, you'd be responsible for payroll, insurance, and coverage when they can't show up.
With Home Instead, we handle everything:
- Professional hiring, training, and supervision
- Background checks, insurance, and 24/7 backup support
- Personalized matches and no long-term contracts
In-home care is all about helping your loved one stay independent, comfortable, and safe—right in the place they know and love. From simple companionship to specialized dementia support, our Care Pros are here to help make life easier.
