Planning Some Fall Fun with Your Elderly Loved One

Fall is here. Don’t let it go by without planning some fun ways to celebrate the season with your elderly loved one. Fall is often one of the most pleasant seasons to get out and enjoy some fresh air, but it’s also one of the seasons most centered around shifting into a slower gear and getting ready for the winter months ahead. For many seniors, fall is their favorite season, so why not help your loved one celebrate it this month?

Four Ways to Celebrate Fall Outside with Your Senior

There are a lot of wonderful ways to enjoy the cooler and drier temps in the fall. It’s fun to pull out those fuzzy sweaters and cozy sweatshirts and head outside, knowing your elderly loved one won’t get too hot or too cold. Here are four easy ways to enjoy a few hours outside together.

  1. Go for a walk or a hike. Whether it’s strolling through a local garden and enjoying the fall blooms or hiking through the woods and listening to the leaves crunch underneath while enjoying the fall leaves, fall is a great time to bring your senior out for one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise – walking.
  2. Shop at a farmer’s market. Fall is the time the harvests come in, so farmers’ markets tend to have lots of delicious produce to share, as well as beautiful fall flowers like sunflowers, and crafts made to celebrate the season. Whether you’re shopping for that day’s lunch or just browsing, a farmer’s market can be a great way to get out and connect with neighbors.
  3. Go to a sports game. School sports, along with some pro sports, start up each fall and offer a great opportunity to get out and cheer on your favorite team.
  4. Visit a pumpkin patch or an apple orchard. Nothing says fall like a hayride through a pumpkin patch. Check your local area to see what kinds of fun, family-friendly events your elderly loved one might enjoy participating in.

Four Ways to Celebrate Fall Inside the Home

Not all seniors can easily get out and about. If your elderly loved one is more home-bound, working with a senior home care agency to help his home reflect the season is a great way to help celebrate all that fall has to offer.

  1. Make some delicious fall treats. Ask your home care provider to help him bake up some pumpkin bread, apple strudel, or even butternut squash soup. Lean into those fall flavors and seasonings that are warm and comforting this time of year.
  2. Get those fall clothes back out. It’s time to pack away the summer shoes and clothes. Your senior’s home care provider can help him get his closets ready for cooler and shorter days.
  3. Decorate the house with seasonal décor. Whether your loved one likes spooky decorations or more traditional fall decorations, putting them on display is a great way to celebrate the season.
  4. Watch some favorite fall movies. Halloween movies are great to watch this time of year while munching on popcorn and sipping a favorite drink. They’re even more fun when watched with a friend, family member, or a brave senior home care provider.

Enjoy fall while the season lasts. Winter will be here soon!
