Advancing how we care for those with memory loss.
While medical research works towards treatments for memory issues like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, there have also been advances in how we care for those living with memory loss. With guidance from Dr. Lakelyn Hogan-Eichenberger, Home Instead’s on-staff gerontologist, we’ve developed a person-centered approach to memory support, uniquely designed to:
- Care for the whole person.
- Honor your loved one’s life before their cognitive decline.
- Help them continue to enjoy activities and hobbies they love.
- Compassionately respond to cognitive and behavioral symptoms.
- Help enhance safety in the home environment.
- Review and adjust care plans as needs change.
Compassionate care begins with a thoughtful care plan.
Over the years, one thing has been clear: no two people experience memory loss the same way. That’s why we take the time to understand your loved one’s needs, routines, and story—so we can create an in-home memory care plan that truly fits your family.

In-home memory care FAQs
Care Pros take time to learn the client's personality, routines, and sources of comfort. A visit may include familiar music, family photos, a walk, meal preparation, hydration reminders, and gentle support with hygiene.
The approach is to make the routine more recognizable, not to argue someone into remembering the same thing. Small details, such as the order of a morning routine or a favorite activity, can help the client feel more settled.
A Care Pro can slow down, offer reassurance, and use gentle encouragement. The goal is to understand what is making the task difficult and adjust the approach, rather than turning the moment into a confrontation.
Support might include waiting and trying again, using a familiar cue, or breaking the task into smaller steps. The client remains part of the routine, with choices respected wherever possible.
Yes. Our office can support clients living with memory loss in private homes and assisted living communities. The setting may change, but the need for familiar routines, patient companionship, and help with personal care can remain.
Families can discuss what the client enjoys, what causes confusion, and which parts of the day are most difficult. That information helps the Care Pro use the visit for meaningful engagement as well as safety.
Our office works with the Alzheimer's Association and with clients who are awarded its grants. That local connection can be especially useful for families trying to understand what support may be available beyond the immediate care schedule.
We can focus on the day-to-day needs the family is seeing and discuss how in-home support may fit alongside community resources. Grant eligibility and program decisions belong to the Alzheimer's Association, not the Home Instead office.
