Ali and Marlon assisted me and my mom in getting caregiver support for us. I am grateful to them both for their kindness and for the ease in which they made the arrangements happen. Thank you. Susan Lipskind

My husband and I, both senior citizens, had a wonderful experience with Home Instead after my husband received practically no advice for post-operative care after hip replacement surgery. We had assistance with bathing, follow-up physical therapy, travel to PT and physicians, and even help with household chores I found more difficult during this time. Samuel, our principal care-giver and my husband bonded strongly during those weeks and we feel he is a member of our family. Donna helped me a lot around the house and even showed me some better ways to do things. Home Instead was wonderful, although we are hoping not to need them again for quite a while. If we did have need, we would have no reservations about asking for it again.

We were very pleased with the service provided by Home Instead. They were extremely responsive. We loved our home aid, Juith. She was amazing!!! We really couldn't have gotten through this without her.

My family had extremely short notice to get an aide organized over a holiday period. They pulled out all stops to make this happen. The CEO personally handle the situation. My mother and father are extremely pleased. Could not be happier. Thank you for treating mother as member of their extended family.

Helpful FAQs

You may be noticing that everyday tasks are becoming harder for your loved one—bathing, dressing, preparing meals, getting around the home, keeping up with household routines, or getting to appointments. Sometimes the change is gradual. Other times, it follows a fall, hospitalization, or a change related to Parkinson’s, ALS, dementia, or another condition.

The local Home Instead organization has served its communities for more than 25 years and frequently sees families seek help when mobility and fall prevention become concerns. Home care doesn’t have to start with a large schedule. A customized care plan can begin with the support your loved one needs now and change over time.

For help starting the conversation, download our What’s Next Toolkit.

The organization serving franchise 211 is part of a broader local operation with more than 25 years of service and a leadership team bringing more than 60 years of combined healthcare experience, including nursing and hospice.

The organization also has approximately 550 Care Pros across its seven-franchise operation. That number is a combined organizational figure, not a headcount for Washington, D.C. alone.

What that means for families is access to a team with experience across personal care, dementia support, companionship, respite, 24-hour care, hospital-to-home support, chronic condition support, specialized home care, veteran care, and end-of-life support.

Same-day care may be possible. The local organization reports same-day capability and has Client Services and On-Call teams available seven days a week. Those teams can conduct consultations at short notice, including on weekends.

That can be particularly valuable when a family is dealing with a sudden change in care needs or an unexpected discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation facility.

Same-day care depends on the individual’s needs, location, schedule, and available Care Pros, so it isn’t a guarantee. The team first needs to understand the situation and determine what staffing can appropriately support the client.

It starts with a conversation about what your loved one needs help with and what they still want to handle independently. From there, the team creates a customized care plan and identifies Care Pros who are appropriate for the care needs and schedule.

Depending on the plan, support may include bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility assistance, meals, companionship, transportation, respite, dementia support, or more extensive care.

The plan can change as circumstances change. Someone recovering from a hospitalization may need more help initially and fewer care visits later, while a progressive condition may require additional support over time.

A Care Pro provides more than task-based assistance. The goal is to understand the client’s routines, preferences, and needs and then provide help in a way that supports their independence.

A typical visit might involve helping with personal care, preparing a meal, assisting with mobility, providing companionship, or helping with transportation. For someone living with dementia, support may involve familiar routines and a more individualized approach to communication and engagement.

Families also benefit from having a local care team involved rather than being responsible for coordinating every detail on their own.

Care Pros in the shared local organization complete a mandatory two-day orientation and skilled-care training program, followed by mandatory annual training.

The organization reports education in areas including memory support, companion care, respite care, 24-hour care, and chronic condition support. This preparation is designed to give Care Pros a foundation for the types of support they provide while allowing the care plan to remain individualized.

Families should also feel comfortable asking how a prospective Care Pro’s experience and preparation align with their loved one’s specific needs.

Yes. Parkinson’s and ALS are among the conditions the broader local organization frequently encounters. Fall prevention is also identified as a common reason families seek support.

Home Instead provides non-medical assistance. Depending on the customized care plan, a Care Pro may help with mobility, personal care, meals, companionship, transportation, and other everyday routines.

Home Instead does not replace medical treatment, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or other clinical care. Instead, the Care Pro’s role is to provide practical support around the services provided by the person’s healthcare team.

The biggest difference is where the care takes place. Home care allows an older adult to remain in their own home and receive one-on-one support around familiar routines. Assisted living involves moving into a residential community where care and other services are provided on site.

Home care may be a fit when someone wants to stay home and their needs can be appropriately supported there. A customized plan can also be adjusted as those needs change.

Assisted living may make more sense when an older adult needs a setting or services that cannot reasonably be provided at home. The right decision depends on the individual, their care needs, safety considerations, and family situation.

Home care costs vary based on the amount of support needed, how often care is provided, and the type of assistance included in the customized care plan.

For example, a family arranging several weekly companion-care visits will have different staffing needs from a family seeking 24-hour support. A post-hospital recovery plan may also look different from ongoing personal care.

The local team can discuss the anticipated schedule and what it will mean for your family’s costs during a care consultation. For broader information about the factors that affect home care pricing, visit Home Instead’s Cost of Care resource.

Payment options vary by family. The broader Home Instead framework can include private pay, long-term care insurance, VA benefits, and other funding sources when applicable.

Families can bring information about long-term care insurance, veteran benefits, or other funding to the care consultation so the team can discuss available options. Eligibility depends on the program and individual circumstances.

During your care consultation, let the team know about any long-term care insurance, veteran benefits, or other funding you are exploring. That can help you understand what may be relevant to the type and amount of care being considered.
