Advancing how we care for those with memory loss.

While medical research works towards treatments for memory issues like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, there have also been advances in how we care for those living with memory loss. With guidance from Dr. Lakelyn Hogan-Eichenberger, Home Instead’s
on-staff gerontologist, we’ve developed a person-centered approach to memory support, uniquely designed to:

  • Care for the whole person.
  • Honor your loved one’s life before their cognitive decline.
  • Help them continue to enjoy activities and hobbies they love.
  • Compassionately respond to cognitive and behavioral symptoms.
  • Help enhance safety in the home environment.
  • Review and adjust care plans as needs change.

Compassionate care begins with a thoughtful care plan.

Over the years, one thing has been clear: no two people experience memory loss the same way. That’s why we take the time to understand your loved one’s needs, routines, and story—so we can create an in-home memory care plan that truly fits your family.

In-home memory care FAQs

A Care Pro may help with familiar routines, meals, personal care, safe movement, companionship, and reassurance. Support is shaped around what the person recognizes and enjoys, not just around a diagnosis.

A Scottsdale family can also discuss how to use familiar activities to reduce anxiety, such as music, photographs, hobbies, or a preferred morning routine.

Three members of the team, including two leaders, are Certified Dementia Practitioners. They complete a 10-hour course and two hours of continuing education each year.

That preparation helps the team use respectful communication and person-centered routines when memory loss changes the way a client responds.

The team works with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute on Dementia Friendly initiatives that include Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, and Carefree. The broader team also participates in Barrow Neurological Institute care-planning forums and supports dementia groups in the area.

These community relationships complement in-home support. Home Instead provides non-medical home care and works alongside the client’s healthcare team.

It can add structure and reliable assistance with the parts of the day that have become difficult. Depending on the care plan, that may include meals, personal routines, companionship, mobility, and safe activities.

A care consultation helps the family decide whether to start with a few visits or a more consistent schedule.

Navigating memory loss can bring a lot of questions. Explore practical articles and guidance to better understand dementia care, support your loved one at home, and feel more prepared for what’s ahead.
