Casey Helped Great-Grandfather Before Joining Home InsteadCAREGiver of the Month - Casey

Five years ago, Casey Tucker got her first real taste of senior care when she lived with her great-grandfather for six months. “We were pretty close. He was in his 80s and primarily had to have help with showers, medication reminders, meal preparation and companionship. Those are some of the needs I have met for seniors as a CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care® since I joined the company seven months ago. After I started helping him, Mom moved here and began assisting him. Things were going OK until about three years ago,” Casey recalled.

Sadly, Feb. 1, 2015, is a day Casey will never forget. “It was a shock when my great-grandpa died unexpectedly in the hospital. He was supposed to be coming home in one more day,” said Casey, who later worked for about a year at a memory-care unit. She watched as her sister joined Home Instead Senior Care® of Victoria a little more than two years ago and worked off and on for owner Stephanie Niles’ award-winning franchise. In January 2017, Casey’s mother became a CAREGiver.

In September 2017, Casey joined the Home Instead Senior Care franchise. Casey, her sister and their mother are on the 24/7 team that helps a client in Palacios. “We really don’t see each very often because of the different work shifts. When we’re together, we won’t name the clients because of privacy rules, but we’ll tell each other about the good days we have,” Casey said.

“I love my job and I love working with seniors and their life stories. The office is great, and the staff always responds when you need it. There are good communications. I have a family that includes six children, and the job fits with my family responsibilities. Home Instead is flexible so I can be involved with my kids in their school, dance, baseball and other activities. Melissa, the trainer, and Emily, the scheduler, are good,” Casey said.

She took off a couple of months last fall to take CNA preparatory classes but has not yet taken the state exam. “Home Instead Senior Care training is good, and it touches on the same things that I learned in the CNA classes. With those classes, I got additional knowledge to supplement what I do.”

Casey has four regular clients — all women — and a full work week that includes day and night shifts. “I feel pretty good about the clients,” she said. “Two of them are primary clients, and the others are 4- to 5-hour shifts.”

Casey said her most memorable days with the clients have been ones in which they are on the move. “I take one client walking around her neighborhood, weather-permitting. We interact, we talk. She grabs my hand. She’s a pretty easygoing client. She is challenged by the loss of her short-term memory,” Casey said.

“Another client is in a wheelchair. It makes her day if I take her outside. She loves to count the birds. She will stay out for a long time if the weather is nice. It’s great to see her enjoy our time together outside.”

Home Instead Senior Care’s guiding principles are also emblazoned on its employees’ hearts: “CAREGivers demonstrate their commitment to their clients by honoring God in all they do; treating their clients and their families with dignity and respect; embracing personal growth to continually improve the quality of their care through franchise training; and building value in their service to others.”

Overall, for the international company that was founded in 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska, by Paul and Lori Hogan, Casey is among more than 70,000 professional CAREGivers. They rate their employers highly. Forbes’ third annual “America’s Best Employers” list honored Home Instead Senior Care as one of its best employers for 2017.

Home Instead ranks 78th on the list, which was generated using anonymous feedback from employees at the nation’s top employers. Companies on the Best Employers’ list range across 25 industry sectors – from government services to retail to healthcare. While the 2017 list featured a variety of healthcare companies, Home Instead Senior Care is the only provider of home care services for seniors.
