Since May 2018, Barbara also has worked for Home
Instead Senior Care® of Lubbock, an award-winning
franchise owned by Tracy and Terry Baugh.
Intertwining the two roles has suited Barbara, who most recently was an
elementary school substitute teacher.
“Mom is in remission
after undergoing breast cancer treatments. Dad has been in and out of the
hospital, and he has been sick off and on since 1999. It works out for them to
be staying with me instead of running between two places. I was looking for a
job, had seen the Home Instead Senior Care website and read what it was all
about,” said Barbara, who was honored as CAREGiver of the Month for March 2019.
“It has been hard to stick
to a rigid work schedule with my parents’ health challenges. I love working for
Home Instead Senior Care. With Home Instead, it is a good situation because the
scheduling is flexible, which is what I need in case something unexpected comes

clients. Her first two clients, a husband and wife, remind her of her parents.
Most of the care is concentrated on the husband, who is on hospice and often

The husband was the focus
of a memorable day last July. He had gotten out of the hospital two months
earlier. “He just got up on his own and wanted to go outside on his walker. He
hadn’t done that for quite a while and surprised us because he had not talked
about going out. He walked toward the living room window and then just did it –
he went outside,” Barbara said.
“His legs were wobbly,
and I stayed close by as he went down the steps and walked around the front
yard. Then he wanted to sit down for a while, and I have a picture of him
sitting on the front porch outside of his home. I felt like it was a big moment
for him and me, as well as for his wife, who was happy. He was thrilled to have
done it. He sat out there for about an hour because it took him a while to
walk. It was a good day for it, because it was not too warm.”
Barbara has two other
clients on Sunday, when her shifts stretch from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Friday
mornings, Barbara assists another couple with responsibilities that include
light housekeeping, grocery shopping and meal preparation. Interaction with her
clients and the fulfillment that comes from helping them are two reasons why
Barbara likes her job. “I enjoy my job. I miss elementary school, but I like
working with seniors,” she said.
