Memorable Family Adventures
When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad couldn't afford overnight vacations. Instead, they'd pile us into the Nash-Rambler wagon for day trips. Legs stuck to the hot vinyl seat, the three of us squirmed our way across Mississippi. We hiked in Bienville National Forest, saw Indian mounds at Winterville, visited mansions in Vicksburg and had Blueberry Lemonade at Mammy's Cupboard in Natchez. No matter how bored we thought we were, Dad's enthusiasm always won us over and made each trip fun.The Original Do-It-Yourself Team
Our house in Jackson was modest and a bit of a fixer-upper. But together Mom and Dad stripped wallpaper, fixed plumbing and refinished floors, turning a run-down bungalow into our home. When I was nine, Mom put a paintbrush in my hand so I could help, too. My little brothers were so jealous!Changing Roles
Today, my parents still live in that house, and the oak mantle is just one of many beautiful touches Dad lovingly put on the place. My folks are still the same fun-loving people, with a can-do outlook, and they're determined to stay in their home. As Mom's arthritis has gotten worse, Dad's stepped up to do the cooking and cleaning. Yet during my last visit, he looked so tired. I noticed piles of paperwork and his wood shop has cobwebs. My brothers and I live too far away to help regularly, but we're concerned that taking care of the house--and of Mom--is wearing Dad down.
