Apple Pie and Growing Up in PortlandFall was always my favorite time of year. Dad would take me on nature walks at Bradbury Mountain State Park and then we'd pick apples at the orchard. Mom would make the best apple pie. Her secret ingredient—real Maine maple syrup—helped her win a few blue ribbons. We'd help peel the apples while she made the buttery crusts. Then it would be torture waiting for them to come hot out of the oven and be served a la mode.
Postcards from a Simpler TimeSure, we had family vacations to Moosehead Lake, The Isles of Shoals, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and Bar Harbor. And I'll never forget the first time we all went skiing at Pleasant Mountain. But the memories I treasure most are simple ones of times shared with Dad, like the first time he let me "caddy" for him at the golf course, giving me a crisp 20-dollar bill when we finished, even though he had to carry the bag for the last 8 holes.
Dealing with ChangeEven though Dad's alone now, he loves living in the old house with the familiar pictures he and Mom hung on the walls so many years ago. He still walks the three blocks to the course for his Thursday morning round with his buddies. But lately I've noticed some changes. He gets confused and can't find things around the house, and last week I found out he hadn't paid the phone bill. He's such an independent guy and I can't imagine moving him to assisted living or a nursing home. He just needs a little help, but I can't be there every day.

Inspired by a Personal ExperienceIt was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead Senior Care in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.
