Lisa Dearly Loves Her Work as a CAREGiver

When CAREGiver of the Month Lisa Wright explained how much she tightly embraces senior care, she was eager to let everyone to know: “This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” and “It has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl.”

Once a family caregiver, Lisa added: “My family has always been important to me. I took care of my grandparents when they were sick. I also took care of my dad when he had become ill.”

About two years ago, Lisa was thrilled to find “a new family” that includes staff members and clients at Home Instead® of Mount Airy after she discovered the award-winning Home Instead franchise on a job website, Indeed.com.

“Home Instead is a great place to work. The office people are great, and so are the owners, Van and Ann Lankford. They are very caring and really great people for whom to work. I love telling people I’m a CAREGiver for Home Instead,” said Lisa, who was honored as Home Instead’s May CAREGiver of the Month.

Van Lankford, who announced Lisa’s CAREGiver of the Month honor, said: “Lisa is an excellent choice for this honor as she truly exemplifies the heart of a CAREGiver. Her care and compassion for her clients is apparent in everything she does. She is a wonderful ambassador for Home Instead.”

Lisa made these points during a discussion of her job:

  • “As a CAREGiver, I’m the eyes and ears of family members who can’t be close by or can’t actually be there for their senior loved ones.”
  • “People can count on me. I’m reliable and dedicated to my job. I feel it’s important because the clients and their families depend on us to take care of them.”
  • “I can do many things for my clients, such as light housekeeping, which includes doing the laundry, as well as preparing meals and taking them to appointments.”

To build on their knowledge and experience, Lisa and other CAREGivers are offered the opportunity to gain dementia-care skills by taking part in the Home Instead network’s one-of-a-kind training protocol. Home Instead’s Person-Centered Care Training for Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association® for incorporating the evidenced-based dementia-care practice recommendations in these topic areas: Alzheimer’s and dementia, person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and behaviors and communication.

For Lisa, touching lives impacts her soul, whether she’s providing the physical help that also includes medication reminders or personal care, or if she is offering emotional support in a companionship role.

“I like most of all knowing I’m making a difference in my clients’ lives by caring for them every day and knowing they can stay in their homes safely. Going to their homes and seeing them smile really big when they get a glimpse of me, that makes my whole day,” Lisa said. “I would like to emphasize that my clients are very important to me, and Home Instead is like family to me. I take my job seriously, and my one goal is to strive to be the best CAREGiver possible.”

Lisa is among more than 90,000 CAREGivers worldwide, and she has helped add to those numbers because of her strong belief in Home Instead’s purpose and core values. Those core values are: “Honor God in all we do; Treat each other with dignity and respect; Encourage growth in ourselves and others; Build value in our service to others.”
