Ramona Feels Blessed to Work as a Care Professional

“Blessed.”

That’s a word that Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month Ramona Routh Spencer uses frequently. It’s truly how she feels because of her Christian faith, her love for society’s most vulnerable and the fulfillment she receives for helping others.

“I’ve been blessed to have been a Care Pro for Home Instead of Mount Airy since Feb. 2, 2022,” said Ramona, who joined Van and Ann Lankford’s award-winning franchise about seven months after the death of her husband Eric. They had been married for 13 years, and Eric had dealt with the challenge of Type-1 diabetes for the final 44 of his 48 years. “I worked for Home Instead of Forsyth County in Winston-Salem, for three years before my husband’s death on July 25, 2021.”

Ramona further explained, “I have always been a caregiver by heart, having co-cared for two grandparents when I was in my 20s and 30s. I’m currently the family caregiver to my 87-year-old dad when I’m not serving as a Care Pro for Home Instead.” If Ramona feels any caregiver burnout, she doesn’t express it. In fact, she said: “I absolutely love my job! I’ve always had the love for people, having longed to be a nurse since I was very little.”

Ramona’s compassionate and empathetic personality led her to the Moravian Theological Seminary in 1999 after she graduated from Pfeiffer University, where she studied Philosophy and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion.

Ramona graduated from the Moravian Theological Seminary in 2004 with a Master’s in Divinity. Among her other academic pursuits, she studied Early Childhood Education at Guilford Technical Community College, where she graduated in 1994.

Ramona worked for Home Instead in Winston-Salem from March 2015 to December 2018 before she underwent shoulder surgery. She also has served as a private-duty caregiver from time to time in the past five years.

When asked about Home Instead clients who have made an indelible impressions on her, Ramona said: “My favorite memories are those moments spent with my ‘little lady,’ whether we are getting a Frosty’s at Wendy’s or hanging out and talking about ‘the glory days.’ Those precious moments with her make my day. No matter what we are doing, we are giving God the glory!”

Ramona added: “There’s no place or agency with whom I’d rather be than Home Instead because I fully believe in its motto: ‘To us, it’s personal.’ Blessings to you all!”
