April 2023 Care Professional of the Month - Annette M.

CONGRATULATIONS Annette Myers for being our Care Pro of the Month for April. Annette has lived a very interesting life. She’s accomplished and overcome many things with sheer determination. Here’s what she shared with us.

Where were you born?

I was born in Hamilton, MO.

Where did you grow up?

By the time I was 12, and finally settled in Arizona, I had moved 24 times. I didn’t move again until I moved to Oklahoma about 8 years ago.

How long have you worked at HI?

As of June, of this year, I will be with HI 5 years.

What’s your favorite part of caregiving?

My favorite part of caregiving is making people feel like they are still important when so many of them feel they have been forgotten.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I have worked at a bakery, fed & milked goats, waited tables, worked with sheet metal & duct work, and had my own cleaning business. When I worked with the duct work, I acted like I knew more than I did. I just wanted a job that paid more money and winged it. I guess I winged it well. When my boss asked me to lay out registers and cut the duct work, I walked around like I knew what I was doing and asked for the blueprints. I took them to my uncle, who was a contractor, and asked him to teach me how to read a blueprint. I was fortunate I worked with guys who were willing to teach me a lot along the way. I was the only woman doing that kind of work at the time. After I married, my husband wasn’t fond of me being around that many men, so I quit. Little did I know he would die a few years later at the age of 35. I foster parented for over 25 years, and even though I was single, I was able to adopt two girls. My oldest daughter, Maggie and her 15-year-old son, Gage, live with me and my youngest daughter, Cassie, lives in Wisconsin. Cassie has a Master’s in social work and is a play therapist. Between caregiving and home schooling my grandson, I don’t have much free time for hobbies. If I ever get free time, I like to read, garden, and sew. I can still play an accordion that I’ve had since I was 16, but with more time I’d love to learn to play the piano and saxophone as well.

Wow, what a life and what a Care Pro. Thank you, Annette, for sharing your life, love, and talents with all of us.  We appreciate you!
