Caring for Seniors with Alzheimer's & Dementia

A Care Pro's Experience

The most valuable lesson I have learned when working with Alzheimer’s clients is that they can change in an instant, so I need to be able to adapt and think quickly. One of the most rewarding experiences for me when caring for a person with Alzheimer’s has been listening to their life’s journey. I find their stories to be interesting and I know they enjoy having someone listen to them when sharing their stories. Home Instead’s staff took their time to explain the care needed for the current client I am caring for. Being well informed helped me to connect with the client from day one.

Caring for Seniors with Alzheimer's & Dementia

A Care Pro's Experience

I have been with Home Instead for 5 years. They are very trusting, understanding and they look out for their employees. They always appreciate what we do for them. Being a caregiver to someone with Alzheimer's has taught me a lot. First, you have to be compassionate and have a lot of patience. I realize these people at one time in their lives., they were young, and they had a career, they had their own family and now they are not able to let others know what they want, so that is why I’m compassionate toward them. I am also patient as there are times when I have to repeat the same answer and I have to keep redirecting them to where their belongings are. There are times we would take a coffee break, do exercises, or go for a walk, just to calm them down if they are agitated. If they are confused, I would show them their family pictures or I would let them know their family will be coming to visit.
