Shala Tries Senior Care, Finds Success as She Shares Her Heart

Shala Evans had worked as a medical assistant in a pediatric care clinic, and she frequently helps her grandmother as a devoted family caregiver, so Shala knew deep down that she had a big heart to share with people. Shala just wasn’t sure about professional senior care since it wasn’t something she previously had tried.

Shala admitted: “I was very nervous. I didn’t know what it was going to be like or what to expect.” After finding Home Instead® online at Indeed.com, Shala joined the award-winning franchise Sept. 2, 2020. Franchise co-owners are Tracey and Creighton Gibson, and Heather Oland is the general manager. Not only did Shala’s compassionate heart shine among her clients and their family members, but it was easy to see that Shala lives Home Instead’s guiding principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.”

“It’s been very interesting and different, and I like the CAREGiverâ„  job a lot and have learned a lot along the way. I continue to help my grandma a lot, and I do things for her that she can’t do for herself. She likes the fact that I found this job with Home Instead,” said Shala, whose Home Instead franchise serves Mooresville, Statesville and Taylorsville and the surrounding area.

Like Shala’s grandmother, Engagement Coordinator Darla Corah said Home Instead also is happy Shala decided to try caregiving. Darla announced recently Shala had been honored as the franchise’s CAREGiver of the Month. “Shala’s focus on Home Instead’s training, processes and procedures of successful caregiving helped her achieve CAREGiver of the Month status. She had been under very strong consideration for our CAREGiver of the Month award this spring,” Darla said, “and circumstances put her front and center for our April honor.”

Shala has two regular clients. “They are both great people, full of endearing personalities and they have good attitudes. I really love the fact I can help someone with the activities of daily living they can’t do for themselves or with which they need help. It makes me feel good knowing I helped someone and made their day a little better. I don’t know if I have one definite favorite memory from my Home Instead experiences, but I have had a lot of good times with everyone I help. We play games, go for walks and get food – just little things that can help us all feel good.”

Shala loves being a part of the CAREGiver team for the Gibsons’ North Carolina franchise, a member of a highly successful network founded in 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska, by Paul and Lori Hogan. The Home Instead network is the world’s leading provider of in-home care services for seniors, with more than 1,200 independently owned and operated franchises that provide more than 80 million hours of care annually throughout the U.S. and 13 other countries.

Shala is among more than 90,000 CAREGivers worldwide, and she has helped add to those numbers because of her strong belief in Home Instead’s purpose and core values. Those core values are: Honor God in all we do; Treat each other with dignity and respect; Encourage growth in ourselves and others; Build value in our service to others.”

Shala wants to follow her heart wherever it leads her. “I’m not really sure what I want to settle on right now for a career, but most definitely I want to keep working with people and helping people,” she said.
