"For the last six years, I have been taking care of an elderly man in his 80's who has dementia and diabetes, but also has an incredible love of music and an amusing sense of humor. My work is mostly night shifts when I make sure he is monitored, clean, comfortable, and hopefully peaceful, accompanied by music from Music Choice Classical Ch 448! He loves it when the song 'Chiqitita' from the play, Mama Mia, comes on as we wait for the next caregiver to make him "Brek," short for breakfast. We get his little doggie's tail wagging, and hands conducting! Speaking of his doggie, "Tookie," something I was glad to learn is the real comfort and calm an animal like a doggie, that is soft and doesn't give any back talk, can be to a client like this fellow. I learned Spanish at Penn State University from a good teacher, and it really helps with giving clear directions. He understands and speaks more English than I would have guessed which was another learning experience for me:" Don't underestimate your client, no matter his or her problems." Home Instead is a dedicated, caring and quality agency, and I am committed to continue caring for my client, and/or other clients with this wonderful agency/staff. My musical theme as a caregiver is "do little things well, with lots of love."

A: I make scheduled visits to seniors’ homes to provide companionship and help them with everyday tasks. Sometimes that means going to their family home, and other times it means serving them in a care facility.

A: Every day is different, and I love that variety! One day I might be cooking lunch and playing cards with a client, and the next day I may be helping a different client. No matter what tasks I’m performing, I leave each shift with a deep sense of accomplishment.
