Honor No. 2: Arleen’s Caregiving Star Continues to ShineJuly 2019 CAREGiver of the Month - Arleen B.

For the second time in 16 months, Arleen Bell has been honored as a CAREGiver of the Month for Home Instead Senior Care® of Statesville, an award-winning franchise owned by Tracey and Creighton Gibson. Arleen, a CAREGiver since Oct. 10, 2017, was first honored in March 2018 and again in July 2019.

Asked about the key to her senior-care success, Arleen replied: “I pray before I go in, and I give my clients and their families 110 percent. Sometimes I don’t know what’s ahead and every client is different, but I always go in with a positive attitude. If you do not take that approach, you might get into a depressing situation. When the office calls for a shift, I want to see what I can learn about the client and how I can best serve him or her. You are never too old to learn.”

Even a regular client’s outlook can vary from day to day, Arleen noted. “I use my knowledge and training techniques to overcome obstacles. Not all situations are easy but there’s never been a bad one. I like clients who are challenging, and I try to take the issues head-on and do something about them. I try to keep the clients on the right track and of course always keep them safe. I give all my clients and their families great respect.”

Arleen has been with a 24/7 client since she started as a CAREGiver. “Because we have a team of CAREGivers to assist her, she’s really not good with names. I wear a hat and glasses. Once she sees me, with my hat and glasses, she knows me. They set me apart, a point of recognition. She’s happy and feels comforted,” Arleen said. On every shift, Arleen’s work exemplifies the Home Instead principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.”

“Our overnight shifts run longer, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I enjoy my time with the client, and she enjoys it. The extended shift is good, and also convenient for me. At the beginning, she was high strung but has mellowed. She gets things off her mind and will give her family history. I play music for her. She likes John Wayne movies, and she wants the radio on sometimes,” Arleen said.

Arleen, noting the client’s favorite pastime, said: “She loves animals, and she has a window where she can look into the backyard and enjoys watching the squirrels, birds and other wildlife. She has no pets now, but we talk about cats and dogs. She has three or four stuffed kitties that she has accumulated from family members.”

The client, in her late 80s, usually keeps her spirits high. “She has good days and bad days. Family, church friends and her chaplain visit; someone usually stops by once or twice a week,” Arleen said, “She is alert, verbal and knows what’s going on. As long as she eats and sleeps well, she’ll go right on. We want to give her something nutritional, but she enjoys pecan swirls and ice cream once in a while and smiles when she gets a special treat like pound cake.”

Helping people is an old hat for Arleen. Seniors and children are her passion. In the 1980s, she was a successful CNA who worked at senior-care facilities and as a private-duty caregiver. She also enjoyed working at a kids’ daycare center. “If anyone who needed help,” Arleen said, “I was there for them, young or old.”

For 18 years, from 1999 until May 2017, Arleen worked for a national department store chain that has undergone major changes and streamlined its catalog and distribution. “When I was looking online for a job in the fall of 2017,” Arleen recalled, “I was debating whether to try to find something like what I had done or attempt caregiving again. I found Home Instead and decided to give it a try. It has been good, and I enjoy working with Tracey and Creighton.”
