Melanie Loves Her Job as an Encourager

CAREGiver of the Month Melanie Meade’s clients and their families agree: Melanie truly exhibits the Home Instead Senior Care® principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.”

Shortly after Melanie joined Home Instead Senior Care of Iredell and Alexander Counties in Statesville in May 2015, she was called to assist a man who lost the use of an arm and partial use of a leg as a result of two strokes.

His primary caregiver is his mother, who pointed out that her son’s outlook has almost completely turned around since Melanie began helping him seven days a week for two hours in the morning and two hours at night.

In addition to getting her client up in the morning and giving him a bed bath, Melanie helps him with brushing, shaving and dressing. Perhaps most important, Melanie encourages her client to work on his physical therapy exercises. “My client goes for physical therapy twice a week at a senior center,” Melanie said, “and I don’t go with him, but I know he declines to do it from time to time. He never does that with me.”

Melanie now sees the determination in her client’s eyes to strive to improve his physical condition. Of course, that attitude has been cultivated by Melanie’s companionship. The client’s mother is appreciative. “His mom is my mom. She has adopted me as her daughter,” Melanie said. “You aren’t supposed to get emotionally attached to clients, but how can you not? I feel as if I have a second family when I am with my clients.”

Although Melanie never had worked in professional caregiving, it is in her blood. Her mother worked as a CNA for 20 years, and Melanie pitched in as a summer volunteer at her mother’s nursing home when she was a teenager. “I helped with activities for the residents, and I liked that,” said Melanie, who passed her CNA boards earlier this year.

Before joining Home Instead Senior Care, Melanie began helping care for her mother, who has been undergoing chemotherapy for three years.

“Mom lives with my older sister next door to me,” Melanie said, “and I try to make it over there for at least a couple of hours every day when my sister is working. It is only fair that I help her. This is God’s way of saying, ‘Follow your passion.’ I saw it as a bit of inspiration before I applied at Home Instead Senior Care, with whom I became familiar because one of my friends works as a CAREGiver. I went to the Home Instead booth at a job fair and applied.”

As hard as she tried, Melanie admitted her passion waned in her previous job, in a warehouse. “I was all worn out from that, physically and mentally,” Melanie said. “At that job, I was just another number to the company – like all my co-workers were. Home Instead Senior Care treats its CAREGivers differently.”

Melanie elaborated: “Home Instead Senior Care is a Christian-based company. They are there for me and my fellow CAREGivers. There is not one person in the office I can’t talk to. You could never ask for a better employer. Everybody is genuinely a good-hearted person. I am not just another number on the spreadsheet. I am a human being to them. Also, the training was good, and I seek any extra training when they offer it.  If I have any question, I know I can call anyone in the office. I receive good guidance from really experienced and knowledgeable nurses and staff, and I appreciate their extra encouragement.

“The company is flexible and will cover for me with another CAREGiver if I need time off. Between helping Mom, working with regular clients and takings fill-in shifts, I think I am out of the house more than I am there,” Melanie joked.

Saying her CAREGiver of the Month honor was a bit of a surprise, Melanie insists she’s focused on only one thing: “My clients and their families.” She added: “I just carry on day-to-day. The future is uncertain for all of us. For my clients, the future is now.”
