CAREGiver of the Month Marlene has a huge heart. Marlene, who has five of her own children, took in 150 foster children from 1984 to 2013 and adopted three of them, keeping three boys together. From 2007 to 2014, she ran a state-licensed adult foster home that could accommodate six residents with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia in a house she purchased. In May 2014, she became a CAREGiver for Home Instead Senior Care® Livonia, an award-winning franchise owned by Glenna Yaroch. Marlene was honored as CAREGiver of the Month for November.“My real goal in life is to help others, and it truly is a blessing for me. I will keep going until I am too tired to do this,” said Marlene, who also has been a licensed real estate broker for many years. “Children were my passion when I was younger. Now that I am 66, it would be too hard to be a foster parent, although I’ve been asked occasionally if I could still take a child. I had a teaching degree, but it was easy to work in real estate because I could pick my working hours and take care of the kids, too.”Asked about senior care, Marlene said: “The caring stays in you no matter what age. My decision to come to Home Instead Senior Care was never about pay. It always was about having an enjoyable job. I must enjoy my jobs or I would not select them, and that has been my philosophy my entire life. To do this type of job, you must love people.” Marlene loves Home Instead Senior Care. “Glenna Yaroch is a wonderful owner and a great example for her workers. She is so humble. She’ll do whatever is needed. She’ll take the garbage out if it helps the office staff that day. Speaking of the staff, everybody is so nice,” Marlene said. “I work weekdays and every other weekend for Home Instead Senior Care, but I do not really consider it ‘work.’ I like to stay busy, and Home Instead is flexible with hours. I am still a real estate broker and have a couple of people working for me. Every minute when I am not working for Home Instead Senior Care, I am in my broker’s office.”Marlene was introduced to Home Instead Senior Care by Mary Kondakor, a two-time CAREGiver of the Month honoree (September 2014 and December 2015). “Mary worked for me at the adult foster home for two years. We go to the same church,” Marlene said. “In fact, Mary and Keshanna, another CAREGiver of the Month, are working with me on a team that provides care for a very sweet client who will turn 98 on Christmas Day.” The client, a competitive soul, is perfect in all respects except maybe one. With a laugh, Marlene said, “She’s funny – she’ll cheat at rummy if she thinks she’s going to lose at the card game. We play cards at least once a day, and I just let her play the way she wants. She keeps a close eye on me when she falls behind, too. In all honesty, I have never had any issues with her in the two years I’ve been with her. She has a sharp mind and is as smart as a whip. She likes to look good: She dresses up and puts on makeup. I am attached to her.”Marlene’s other regular client is a 94-year-old female who has Alzheimer’s. “She is a sweetheart who made a beautiful Christmas card for me last year,” Marlene said. “Like my other client, she likes to play cards, and she also plays checkers and match games. Because she can’t see well, I read to her. I also find music for her from the cable TV channels. I love my clients. There is no word to describe them other than ‘sweet.’ ”
