CAREGiver of the Month - Henrica

While Lending a Hand to Grandmother, Henrica Helps Others

By now, 25-year-old Henrica should have earned a doctorate in “Family Cargiving” because she’s in her ninth year of making sure her grandmother, who is 76, can remain safely and comfortably at home. At Home Instead Senior Care® Livonia, where Henrica has worked since April 21, 2015, she has earned CAREGiver of the Month honors for assisting senior loved ones who are not named “Grandma.”

Her grandmother can testify to Henrica’s ability: “Henrica is so caring – I told her she should also go out and take care of others, too. She should share her love.” Henrica tries to stop every day at her grandmother’s house, about five miles away. “Grandma uses a walker and is doing well. Usually it is cooking and cleaning that she needs. I have siblings and cousins who also take turns helping her, so I can’t take all of the credit,” Henrica said.

Henrica said she thinks of family when she’s on a shift for owner Glenna Yaroch’s award-winning franchise, saying, “Being a Home Instead CAREGiver doesn’t feel like a job because it is like helping my grandmother. I’ve always loved older people and have been close with many of them. When I look at my clients, I see my grandparents. What I like best is the companionship aspect. I love helping clients and getting to know them and their family members.”

The work suits Henrica just fine, but it might not have been what she had in mind when she was a young girl. “When I was growing up,” she admitted, “I was freaked out about some things that nurses, CNAs and personal attendants have to do. I never thought in a million years I would be doing something like I am doing. But I would have to say I truly love being a CAREGiver.”

While providing ongoing training, Home Instead Senior Care also offers flexible scheduling and compatible CAREGiver-client matches to make the job attractive for Henrica and her busy life. Henrica’s family includes her husband and three children, ages 5, 3 and 9 months. “This is the best job I’ve ever had. Home Instead Senior Care is a really good fit for me because they find the days and hours that work for me. They are very caring and understanding,” said Henrica, who found the franchise during an internet job search.

“I take overnight shifts because it works best for me and my family. My children are in bed when I leave and have not yet gotten up when I come home. Overnight shifts are fine because I am very energetic. I am a mom with three kids, so I am used to being on the run. I can sleep during the day, and my husband is a big help because he cooks. He is happy for me, and he is understanding although he misses me on the nights when I work.”

Henrica’s family shared her with a client on Mother’s Day. “Since I usually worked Sundays with her,” Henrica said, “her family invited me to their special big dinner. I felt honored, and it was so nice of them to include me. They are wonderful people, and they did all of the meal preparation. I stayed and helped them clean up. I fell in love with the client and miss her now because she went into hospice. Mother’s Day was a good and wonderful day for my client. She was happy and talking.”

Although Henrica lost the client, she recently gained another one who lives with her husband. “The husband doesn’t need a lot of assistance,” Henrica said, “but I help him by helping his wife from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. as part of a 24/7 team. She is 93, has dementia and uses a walker and wheelchair. I am looking forward to coming alongside them to manage their challenges.”

Henrica believes her future looks good with Home Instead. “I have good bosses and schedulers,” she said. “Honestly, I tell everybody what a great company this is. It is the best job ever.”
