"The staff is caring and kind...just what we wanted for our aunt who wants to remain as independent as possible. I recommend!
For years Chris and Betsy had prayed about owning a business together, and in 2000 the time seemed right to pursue that dream in Roanoke, VA. Having both been vocational ministers previously, and driven by a passion to honor God through service to others, they knew they had found the answer to their prayers with the discovery of the senior care industry, and even more with Home Instead Senior Care, a company founded on the principles of Honoring God and serving others.
Both Chris and Betsy had widowed mothers in Georgia, who were in their 80's at the time. The Heads lived in Roanoke, VA, several hours from either mother, but were increasingly aware of the challenges that come with helping and caring for aging parents over a distance. Having seen their own church congregation also dealing with aging issues, they felt drawn to this important service industry both from their faith foundation and also from the realization that great opportunities lay ahead to enhance the lives of seniors throughout the Roanoke Valley and Western Virginia. After a visit to Omaha, NE, where they met Paul Hogan, the founder of the company, their decision was made and the Roanoke office of Home Instead Senior Care opened in February of 2001. In 2003, the Lynchburg office was opened in response to frequent calls asking for help in that area. More staff were hired, more seniors were helped, and the company continued to expand its services in a sincere and tireless effort to meet the needs of our aging population throughout central and western Virginia.
In recent years Betsy's role in the company has transitioned to becoming a recognized expert in senior care issues. She currently serves on several Boards and is frequently asked to speak to groups and classes about ways to care for aging loved ones. Educating the public in ways to age gracefully, healthily, and independently is one of her greatest passions, after serving God and her family. She constantly strives to expand her expertise in order to better help those who struggle with aging issues.
In 2003, Chris was instrumental in working with state legislators to rewrite regulations that created licensure options for non-medical Homecare companies that today allow Home Instead Senior Care to assist our clients with ADL's without being classified as a full-blown Home Health company. This experience of working through the legislative process led, ultimately, to more political involvement, and in 2011 Chris was elected to the VA House of Delegates, representing the 17th District. From this new position, Chris carries forth his advocacy of improving quality of life for seniors along with his interest in making Virginia more business-friendly. He feels that God has been preparing him for his position as a legislator over his entire life.
Today the Head's two franchises of Home Instead Senior Care cover Roanoke, Lynchburg, Salem, Smith Mountain Lake, and 9 surrounding counties. Many wonderful people oversee the daily operation of the company, which employs several hundred CAREGivers(sm) and serves hundreds of seniors and their families throughout the company's service area. But still, from the first senior who received service through their local Home Instead office, right up to the most recent new client, the motivation behind every one of Home Instead's employees is to honor God through the service they provide every hour of every day to the seniors, their families, and the community.
As Betsy has said, "Together, Chris and I are inspired to change the face of aging by helping every senior we serve to maintain their independence, safely and with dignity, wherever they live. Our amazing staff gets all the credit for making our local Home Instead business the most trusted source for non-medical Homecare for seniors in our part of Virginia!"
