5 ways to prepare for coronavirus disease 2019

During these challenging times with the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Home Instead Senior Care is taking added measure to ensure the safety of our clients, as well as our caregivers.  A part of making sure to protect yourself and others is knowing the facts and how to properly prepare you and your family in case COVID-19 spreads in your community.

  1. Know the signs & symptoms
  • Symptoms of COVID-19 can range from asymptomatic to mild symptoms to severe illness that could possibly lead to death.
  • Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure
  • Common symptoms include:
    • Fever
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
  1. Take extra precautions for those at a higher risk, which includes
  • Older adults
  • People with underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and lung disease
  1. Take steps to prevent illness
    • Wash hands frequently
    • Clean frequently touch surfaces
    • Stay home if you’re feeling sick
    • Practice respiratory etiquette
  2. Create a household plan in case someone in your home gets sick or the spread of COVID-19 in your community disrupts daily activity:
    • Prepare a 2-week supply of food, water, medications and other essentials. Know how to get food if possible
    • Ensure you have a way to communicate with family and friends
    • Establish plans if childcare is needed, if you need to work from home
  3. Stay informed! Be aware of emergency plans for schools and workplaces.  Stay up to date on local information and trends of COVID-19 cases.
