Everyone deserves to enjoy the warmth of the holiday season, and this year, Raleigh area seniors who are alone or impoverished will be able to do just that.
Sponsored by the Home Instead Senior Care® office serving Raleigh, Cary, Apex and Wake County since 2003, the 2015 Be a Santa to a Senior® program will provide companionship and gifts for nearly 400 lonely and isolated seniors. The program is made possible by the generous support of area nonprofit organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community.
"There are so many seniors, right here in the greater Raleigh area, that have nothing and no one," said John Posey, owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office. "Through this program, we are able to show them that they are valuable members of our community and that people still care."
Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with 12 area retailers and businesses who will display Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees from Nov. 10 to Dec. 8 featuring ornaments with seniors' first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped (with the ornament attached) to any of the tree locations.
Then, on Dec. 11, the community is invited to a holiday gift-wrapping party to wrap the gifts generously donated by area families. The event will take place at Whispering Pines Gracious Retirement Living, 7501 Lead Mine Rd in Raleigh, beginning at 10 a.m. until all presents are wrapped. Program partners and volunteers will handle gift distribution to local seniors who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.
"We have seen, firsthand, how much this program means to local seniors," said Posey. "Without it, there would be seniors for whom the holidays would pass without even a visit."
