Before you sign up with a home care agency, make sure you know what kind of services your loved one needs and how they will be addressed. Home health care can include skilled care services from a licensed nurse or therapist, custodial services (such as cooking and cleaning), and/or personal care services (such as feeding or bathing). Below is a list of questions to ask when interviewing a home care agency. Remember, you are hiring the agency and the quality of care is directly related to the quality of their systems and processes.

  • What kind of care does the agency provide? Do they offer the services your loved one needs?
  • What is the cost of services? Get this information in writing.
  • How are caregivers screened and hired?
  • Who would come to the house? How much training has this person had?
  • How does the agency decide what kind of services your loved one needs? Do they do an assessment? Will they talk to your loved one's doctor?
  • What guidelines does the agency use to match caregivers and clients?
  • How often and how are re-assessments done?
  • Is someone available for questions or emergencies 24/7?
  • What provisions does the agency make when a caregiver must call off work?
  • How are quality assurance visits done and handled?
  • What processes are in place for staff/family communications?
  • How often do caregivers, administrators and family meet to discuss status and changes of the patient's condition?
  • Does the agency offer discounts or free service to people with limited means?
  • Does the agency have references or satisfaction reports for itself and staff?

Once you have compiled the answers to these and other questions you may have from several caregiver agencies, visit the agencies and meet administration and caregivers to form your overall impressions and finalize your decision.
