The weather is warming up, and many of us have started thinking about spring cleaning. Spring offers a great opportunity to clear out the cobwebs and bring in the sunshine. Show your client you care by doing a little spring cleaning around the house. Here are a few easy tasks to spruce up your client's living quarters:

  • Move warm clothing to the back of the closet
  • Change the bed linens
  • Dust artwork, blinds, and vents
  • Organize the medicine cabinet; remove unused items and expired medications
  • Shake out rugs and hang them outside in the fresh air
  • Sanitize the refrigerator and discard expired or spoiled food
  • Help get your client's name removed from junk mail lists
  • Clear the clutter to decrease the risk of falls and fire hazards

But what if your client has a hard time letting go of their belongings? It helps to understand why they are holding on to the items. There may be a sentimental attachment, or they may feel obligated to keep things that were given to them. You don't want to convince your client to give these items away, but perhaps you could encourage them to re-gift an item to a close friend or family member.

So how do you go about getting all the clutter in its place? Make a game plan. Understand this likely won't be a one-day event. Take a quick inventory of the house, list what needs to be done, and tackle the list one by one.

Keep an eye on your client through the process, it may take an emotional toll. Take breaks when you need to. It's also important to remember that your client needs to make the decision on each item. You can keep the project going, but ultimately, they need to have the control of deciding where items go.

Remember that many of the things you'll be going through have a special memory for your client. Don't get too caught up in the organizing that you forget to take a little stroll down memory lane. You might be surprised at the stories you'll hear!

Bonus: Spring cleaning is a good time to make sure there is a fire extinguisher in the residence and to review the emergency evacuation plan with your client!
