When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad couldn't afford fancy hotel vacations. Instead, they'd pile us into the station wagon for camping trips. Packed into the back seat, the three of us squirmed our way across South Dakota, visiting Crazy Horse and the Reptile Gardens in the Black Hills, Wild Bill Hickok's grave in Deadwood, Badlands National Park and, of course, the Wall Drug Store . No matter how bored we thought we were, Mom and Dad's enthusiasm always won us over and made each trip fun.

Even though money was tight, our little home in Rapid City was always as neat as a pin. My folks were so proud to be homeowners. Together, they hung wallpaper, polished the floors, built a garage, and planted shrubs and flowers. When I was nine, Mom put a paintbrush in my hand so I could help, too. My little brothers were so jealous!

Changing Roles

Today, our parents still live in that house and they love the neighborhood they've called home for so many years. My folks are still the same fun-loving people, with a can-do outlook, and they're determined to stay in their home. As Mom's arthritis has gotten worse, Dad's stepped up to do the cooking and cleaning. Yet during my last visit, he looked so tired. I noticed piles of paperwork and his wood shop has cobwebs. My brothers and I live too far away to help regularly, but we're concerned that taking care of the house -- and of Mom -- is wearing Dad down.
