Myrna Keeps Her Promise, Stays With Client Until His Passing

CAREGiver of the Month Myrna Sadler felt honored to fulfill her Home Instead® client’s most important wish. “He always said he wanted me with him until the end, and I was. His wife was so happy with the care I gave her husband that she kept me employed with her,” Myrna said.

The sad moment came about five months ago. “I lost one of my favorite clients,” said Myrna, who joined Home Instead of Philadelphia nearly seven years ago after she retired from a major chain food store. Steve Levin owns the award-winning Home Instead franchise; General Manager Charlea Lyn Grieco announced Myrna’s November CAREGiver of the Month honor.

Myrna was looking online and came across Home Instead after her retirement. “Although I was taking care of my second husband at the time, I needed money to help my daughter finish nursing school,” Myrna explained. “At an early age, I took care of my grandmother, so I’ve always enjoyed taking care of people.”

In addition to her strong companionship skills that she developed as a family caregiver, Myrna provides safety assurance, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and transportation and errands. Myrna and other CAREGivers offer personal assistance with eating, grooming, dressing, bathing, incontinence care, dementia support, cognitive impairment, hospice support and mobility assistance. By expertly doing so, CAREGivers not only assist their clients, but help their families eliminate worry, reduce stress and re-establish personal freedom.

Among the considerations for achieving CAREGiver of the Month status, an employee has shown that he or she has gone above and beyond the call of duty when circumstances clearly required it. Empathy and compassion are taken into account for the award, as well as skill and wisdom for dealing with challenging situations. Myrna embodies Home Instead’s guiding principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.” Sometimes her performance seems to “fly under the radar,” but Myrna is exceptional at her work with any client.

Myrna has loved her experiences with Home Instead and its clients. “Since working with Home Instead, I have met some really nice, talented and amazing people and experienced a joy that is unexplainable,” Myrna said. “If you enjoy working with people and want a really rewarding feeling that comes from helping others, then Home Instead is the place to be.”

Myrna is among more than 100,000 CAREGivers worldwide, and she has helped add to those numbers because of her strong belief in Home Instead’s purpose and core values. Those core values are: Honor God in all we do; Treat each other with dignity and respect; Encourage growth in ourselves and others; Build value in our service to others.”
